With the democratized demand for mass production, the pursuit for more efficient automated systems has led to the exponential growth in computer processing power and the birth of artificial intelligence (Al) and machine learning. Quite recently, Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University, predicted that: "It’s likely that machines will be smarter than us before the end of the century - not just at chess or trivia questions but just at about everything, from mathematics and engineering to science and medicine.
In today's context, we may rest assured the awesome power of the human mind will continually conceive new technologies for various applications not limited to the manufacturing industry. Despite technological convergence promised by the proponents of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR), the discourse on the ethical dimension of Al leaves much to be desired. The lack of emphasis on the ethical education of Man means information and knowledge would continue to be under the risk of being distorted.
This round table discussion will deliberate on the developing trends from the view point of industry players, especially in the local Malaysian scene, where considering the policy adoptions by ministerial and regulatory bodies such as the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). The discussion will also aim to examine the ethical implications of Al from the perspective of religion and ethics, therefore providing a space for academics, experts, and policymakers to converge and form consensus for the best ethical framework for Al.
The main objectives of the RTD are:
(i) To understand the emerging trends of Al and its Impact on society in
Malaysia.
(ii) To identify the current emerging ethical issues surrounding Al.
(iii) To explore the possibilities of an ethical framework of Al from religious and philosophical perspectives, especially for the Malaysian context.
You are cordially invited to send your reporter and photographer/cameraman to cover the round table.
