ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION "SCIENCE FOR SOCIETY"

Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM) will organize the Round Table Discussion with the theme “Science for Society” on 28 February 2019/23 Jamadilakhir 1440H at IKIM Grand Hall.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has been quoted as saying that Malaysia needs to leverage on science, technology, and innovation (ST) to fuel economic advancement, societal progress and new sources of growth. During the past five to six decades, the scientific research and technology have advanced rapidly and have led to a long and impressive list of innovations and products – in terms of environmental management, defence system, food security and food production, health issues, forensic science and crimes, transportation, communication, new knowledge discoveries and so on. Eventually, the scientific studies will benefit the whole society and nature. However, while there are enormous benefits that science can offer to the society, there are also certain aspects of science that need to be taken care of so that science does not harm society or nature.
STI that keeps on growing and advancing, if not controlled by ethics, cultures, and values inherent in society, will eventually lead to destruction or threaten the life of human and nature. The findings in research or scientific studies are often seen to be far-fetched due to the scientific data or scientific narrative not being well communicated to, and understood by, the public, except the community of science themselves. Programmes advocating public involvement in the application of science on the ground are also lacking. Thus, communicating science to the society through various approaches is urgent and imperative today so that the benefits of science shall reach the society the way it should.
This Round Table Discussion themed “Science for Society” is held to highlight recent developments in science which have had or shall have profound impacts on people, society and culture. The discussion will gather experts and professionals among researchers, government bodies, NGOs, universities and individual experts from various disciplines of science and social studies to deliberate on the impacts of science on people and society.
The main objectives of the RTD are:
(i) To give the public an understanding of scientific values that are useful in their daily lives;
(ii) To highlight the issue of lack of interest in STEM among the community, especially among students;
(iii) To discuss the efforts in bringing the world of science closer to society through various appropriate programs.
