A. INTRODUCTION

The inability to fully understand that taking care of the environment is a part of religious responsibility has resulted in the indiscriminatory destruction of the environment and global climate change. In fact, various issues plaguing the environment in recent years clearly reflect the attitude and lack of awareness on the part of significant sections of society regarding the climate crisis.

In her 2014 report, the UN Climate Chief, Christiana Figueres stated that in order to seriously address global climate change, human’s view or knowledge, attitude and behaviour towards the environment need to be drastically changed. Religion is shown by empirical research (e.g. P.J. Posas from University of Liverpool in 2007) to have such an effect. However the idea needs to be galvanised into concrete action plans, far beyond the ceremonial religious declarations such as that Islamic Declaration for Climate Change (IDCC), and the Christian Declaration of Climate Change by the Vatican (Laudato Si), etc.

Appropriate guidelines and action plans need to be carefully formulated, which purpose must impart the values and ethics for the protection of the environment.

B. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the expert consultation are as follows:

1. To provide understanding on religious responsibilities towards the environment especially in the context of the Maqasid Shariah.

2. To highlight religious values and ethics in keeping climate change and environmental degradation in check, and to showcase good practices.

3. To discuss current issues related to climate change and environmental degradation in order to provide constructive and sustainable solutions to the identified problems.
