CEO OF SUNWAY EDUCATION GROUP TO SPEAK ON "ENVISIONING MALAYSIA'S FUTURE EMPLOYMENT: TRENDS VS SKILLS" AT THE 22ND PERDANA DISCOURSE SERIES

Tuesday 23/08/2022

Ask any young adult in Malaysia what their top concerns are and chances are their response will include “career prospects” and “getting a good job”. With Covid-19 lockdowns behind us and the economy opening up, it seems opportunities for solid, well-paying jobs should be plenty. And yet, the Department of Statistics report that as many as a third of Malaysian graduates were under-employed in 2021 - working in poorly-matched semi-skilled or low-skilled jobs. That the figure was an increase over the previous year’s points to structural human resource issues that may have intensified since the pandemic.

With the frenetic pace of technological change, the job skills that are in demand are changing, too, and the nature of work has also been called into question when the world went into lockdown, with remote work and borderless hires making it possible for both job seekers and employers to look beyond national boundaries for jobs and candidates. What do all these mean for the Malaysian job market and how can Malaysia ensure that the country has the necessary talents to meet the demands of the digital age?

These issues, and more, will be discussed at the twenty-second Perdana Discourse Series “Envisioning Malaysia’s Future Employment: Trends vs Skills”, taking place on the 25th of August 2022 at Perdana Leadership Foundation, Putrajaya, with Professor Elizabeth Lee, Chief Executive Officer, Sunway Education Group as keynote speaker. With more than 30 years’ experience in the field of private education, Prof Elizabeth Lee has led Sunway Education Group to grow from just one institution into the dynamic group of over 20 institutions today.

Professor Elizabeth’s keynote will be followed by a panel discussion with Dato' Ahmad Nadzarudin bin Abdul Razak, Honorary Treasurer, Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF), Assoc Prof Dr. Soo Wincci, Assoc Professor, Conservatory of Music, UiTM, Ms See Wai Hun, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, JurisTech, and Puan Noraliza Mohamad Ali, Senior Deputy Executive Director, Malaysian Bureau of Labour Statistics, Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

“Employment, especially graduate employment, is an important issue, especially to the many students who will soon leave the comfort of their universities to find jobs. Talent has always been critical but now it has become even more so for any country to develop and thrive in the Information Age where apps and software rule, and wars are being fought in digital space. It is also important that there are sufficient jobs for the talents that graduate from our universities,” said Tan Sri Nik Mohamed Nik Yaacob, Executive Director, Perdana Leadership Foundation.

The Perdana Discourse Series is organised by Perdana Leadership Foundation and is fully sponsored by DRB-HICOM Berhad. Admission to the event is free but seats are limited. Please visit our official website https://bit.ly/3PJIEV4 to register. The discourse proceedings will be published later this year.
