BASF ENGINEERING PLASTICS PLANT IN MALAYSIA CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY
Tuesday 03/11/2009
Pasir Gudang, Johor -3 November 2009 –
- Continuous commitment to investing in people and facilities
- Investment of more than US$1 million in last decade for staff recruitment and training
BASF is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its engineering plastics plant in Pasir Gudang, Malaysia. This world-scale plant produces polyamide and polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) engineering plastics for the automotive, electrical, electronics, and other industries.
"Commissioned in 1999, this was the first engineering plastics compounding plant that BASF built in Asia, underlining our strategic commitment to engineering plastics and our long-term focus on Asia Pacific as the fastest growing region,” says Hermann Althoff, BASF’s Group Vice President, Engineering Plastics Asia Pacific. “This plant in Malaysia has thrived and achieved great success over the last 10 years. It has received excellent ratings in audits conducted by leading global customers like Toyota and Bosch, and remains our most efficient and cost competitive production base for high quality engineering plastics. After establishing this plant we have added engineering plastics plants in Korea, China and India.” BASF’s total engineering plastics compounding capacity in Asia exceeds 100,000 tons per annum.
In recent years, BASF has further invested in this plant: In 2005, the capacity of the plant was increased to 45,000 tons per annum. In 2007, the plant was further strengthened with the establishment of a Product Development Center. This technical facility focuses on the development of innovative engineering plastics to suit specific market requirements in Asia Pacific. Successful product developments include: engineering plastics for direct metalized headlamp bezels, air intake manifolds, as well as various products with special properties for the electronics industry. This facility benefits from being part of BASF’s integrated global research and development network in the field of engineering plastics.
BASF has also kept its staff up to date by providing continuing education and training opportunities. In the last 10 years, the company has invested more than US$1 million in recruiting and training staff for this plant. Malaysian experts from this plant were also sent to China and India to train staff at the new plants in those countries.
