NEWCOMER PUNCAK SEMANGAT PLANS NATIONWIDE ROLLOUT OF NEXT-GENERATION WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY ‘LONG-TERM EVOLUTION’

Tuesday 26/07/2011

Puncak Semangat MD says the company intends to reach out to the entire country via its LTE connectivity, bridge the digital divide and empower rural economies

JOHOR BAHRU, 26 July 2011 “ Newcomer to the telecommunications scene, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd (PSSB) today showcased its Long-Term Evolution (LTE) ‘4G’ Proof-of-Concept (PoC) to mark the company’s trail onto the high speed broadband track and in support of the National Broadband Initiative (NBI) to reach the ‘rakyat’ beyond the urban and sub-urban areas.

Minister of Information, Communication and Culture Datuk Seri Utama Dr Rais Yatim launched the showcased that also saw PSSB constructing the model of “the future” classroom.

PSSB Managing Director, Datuk Abdullah Kadir Bacha indicated that the company was resolute in going beyond providing access and insisted that the industry has accepted the superiority of the 4G technology as opposed to the WiMax technology that is expected to be phased out over the next five years.

“In support of the national broadband initiative to narrow the digital gap between the urban and the rural areas, thus make the broadband accessible to all, we are also working towards providing compelling content that will drive the national agenda as well as benefiting the people,” said Abdullah.

He also added that, as one of the 4G license contenders that awaits the award of the spectrum, PSSB was committed in contributing towards the development of the entire 4G eco-system, developing the human capital and creating opportunities for all.

Abdullah was hopeful that PSSB have the capacity to make a huge impact in the market place and assured all its stakeholders, namely the people and the Government of Malaysia that it values the responsibility it entails.

The superior wireless technology promises a download speeds of 100 mbps with upload speeds of 50 mbps and has seen tremendous take up. Over 196 operators in 75 countries are investing in LTE comprising 140 network commitments in 56 countries and additional 56 pre-commitment trials taking place as of April 2011.

“We see the broadband and the need for speed as the main market for growth and we anticipate by 2015, Malaysia will have over 8 million subscribers. That presents us the opportunity and we are excited with the prospects. In line with the NBI, Malaysia have achieved 57 per cent broadband penetration and our studies have indicated that it is expected to touch 75 per cent by 2015,” he added.

The NBI which is under the purview of the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture undertaken through the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC, aims to have broadband connections to 3.2 million homes in Malaysia by the 2010, with the potential of adding one per cent to GDP and 135,000 new jobs.

Apart from observing the conceptualised futuristic classroom, showcasing how LTE can undertake the next-generation large data volume demands, Rais also witnessed the exchanged of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Abdullah and PSSB’s technology partners IP Wireless and Huawei.

Together with these renowned technology partners, PSSB is set to spearhead the development of the LTE ‘4G’ which is the next big step in wireless technology that allows users access to the next-generation broadband capabilities such as streaming video, remote data access and large-volume information sharing.

Abdullah said PSSB was also committed to develop local competencies that would drive the company’s initiative.

“We are serious about developing talents and even encourage young and new ICT technopreneurs to be part of our development ecosystem,” he said.

He said that in order to achieve this critical nation-building vision, PSSB signed a MoU with UniKL to set up the first centre of excellence in the country to undertake training as well as the development of skilled and qualified workforce for the next generation high speed broadband and the 4G industry for both domestic and regional markets.

PSSB will also provide LTE coverage for UniKL, GIAT MARA and MARA campuses and premises nationwide. Meanwhile, the consortium partners will develop a framework, course material and skills on the technical and commercial aspects of the Wireless industry.

“Human capital development is a leading light as far PSSB is concerned as access is not treated as merely a utility. While it is essential to create a world class infrastructure in terms of network throughput, capacity, availability, coverage and scalability, the real money or the real success is in developing content ecosystem where human capital can drive,” Abdullah said, as he emphasized on PSSB’s commitment in taking the 4G LTE beyond providing access.

PSSB’s LTE Proof of Concept reflects the company readiness in deploying the infrastructure that would boost the current wireless technology that would eventually be phased out. The total digital technology would enable rich multimedia applications that meant an upgrading of present wireless architecture, amongst other things.

LTE is designed to handle both current and future communications needs for the years to come and requires significant investments. As a new player, PSSB shall have the advantage of employing new and not legacy technology and infrastructure.

“We realise that as an upstart in the telecommunication arena, we will face many challenges but it also means that we have the advantage to leapfrog as we do not carry with us the excess baggage of obsolete and non-scalable technologies,” Abdullah concluded.
