Kuala Lumpur. Oct 20 (Bernama) -- Asiaflex Products Sdn Bhd, Technip’s flexible pipe manufacturing plant in Tanjung Langsat, Johor, Malaysia made its first delivery recently, in a handover ceremony to Petrofac E&C Sdn Bhd (“Petrofac”). The fast track project was awarded to Technip in March this year and the pipes will be used for the development of the Sepat field located offshore Terengganu, Malaysia.

Participating in the handover ceremony were Edgar Pushparatnam, Senior Vice President, Technip in Asia Pacific and Managing Director of Technip in Malaysia and Zameri Embong, Petrofac’s Head of Business Development with Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Azman Mahmud, Deputy Director General II of MIDA, and Abdul Malik Jaafar, General Manager International Projects, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, as honored guests.

This delivery is significant to Asiaflex Products. First, it marks a successful beginning for the manufacturing plant following its inauguration in November 2010 by the Prime Minister, Yang Amat Berhormat Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. Second, these flexible pipes will be deployed for the first time in a subsea project in Malaysia.

“Since it commenced operations in July 2010, Asiaflex Products has received orders from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Vietnam. Today is an important milestone for Technip as this delivery is the first for Asiaflex Products and also the first batch of flexible pipes manufactured by the plant that will be used in offshore developments in Malaysia”, Edgar Pushparatnam said in his address at the ceremony. Pushparatnam also noted that despite the challenging timeline, Asiaflex Products managed to deliver on time.

“Malaysia has achieved significant progress to be the regional hub for the manufacture of machinery and equipment (“M&E”) and services for the oil and gas industry. With the presence of key players like Technip, which has access to a wide range of world class technologies, and state-of-the-art in-house technologies, the Malaysian oil and gas M&E sector has benefited in terms of technological progress, skills development and outsourcing requirements,” remarked Dato’ Azman Mahmud.

He added that Asiaflex Product’s investment of over RM600 million reflects confidence in the strong fundamentals of the country’s diverse economy. “The manufacturing [facility] not only provides potential business opportunities to supporting industries, it has also created employment particularly in the technical and skilled categories. This will definitely contribute to Malaysia’s aspiration to be a high-income economy.”

Asiaflex Products is the only flexible pipe manufacturing facility in Asia Pacific and Technip’s third after its existing plants in Le Trait, France and Vitória, Brazil. This plant is part of the Group’s capex program to reinforce its worldwide leadership in the Subsea market. The manufacturing site is also designed for umbilical production and includes an offshore logistic base.
