The three-day event jointly organized by T-Best Events Sdn. Bhd and the Royal Selangor Yacht Club will feature seven teams, which took part in the first round in Lumut in May. The MMRC, sanctioned by both the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWRT) is a three-stage event. The winner of the MMRC will represent Malaysia at the Monsoon Cup in December this year.

Following the first event in Lumut, Perak, Jeremy Koo (Koo Racing Team) leads the pack with 25 points, followed by Hazwan Hazim (Permai Hotel Match Racing Team) with 20 points. The champion of this stage would take home RM8000 prize money while the first runner up and second runner up will get RM5000 and RM2000 respectively.

Noorul Ashikin Mohd Din, General Manager of Tourism Selangor Sdn. Selangor has many hidden treasures that await the public and the Jabatan Laut Marina in Pulau Indah is one of it. Our aim is to create awareness for watersports facilities and infrastructures that are readily available. The MMRC is a perfect fit for that reason”

MYA Vice President, Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh thanked Tourism Selangor for their sponsorship towards the circuit. “We hope that similar sponsorship by other organizations would go a long way to improve and promote match racing in Malaysia.”

The one team with the highest points collected over three events will be declared the Champion of the MMRC and will get the opportunity to represent Malaysia in the season ending finale of the AWMRT, the Monsoon Cup in Terengganu on 3-8 December 2012.

About Match Racing

Back in 2006, the Monsoon Cup was the first race to have a series of qualifiers to encourage the participation of young, upcoming local sailors in the professional match race scene. Those qualifiers were the Malaysian Match Racing Championship (MMRC) and the Asian Match Racing Championship (AMRC).

From 4 teams at its inception in 2006, the Malaysian Match Racing Championship has grown to have 13 local teams taking part in 2009. The winner will be the sole Malaysian representative at the Monsoon Cup, the final and deciding leg of the Alpari World Match Racing Tour. It is a chance to compete with the world’s top match race sailors.
