BAYAN LEPAS, PENANG, July 6 (Bernama) -- Phison Electronics Corp, market leader in NAND Flash controllers and applications, is pleased to announce its historic debut in Malaysia with the opening of Phisontech Centre in the Northern Corridor Technology Development Centre (NTDC) in Bayan Lepas, Penang.
Mr Pua Khein Seng, Chief Executive Officer, Phison Electronics Corp, Taiwan, said the Centre will undertake the development and design of flash memory applications and solution products.
He said the assembly of the finished flash memory products would be outscored to related Small Medium Enterprises.
"The opening of the centre fulfilled our commitment and pledge made in March, 2012 to establish the centre, " said Mr Pua Khein Seng, the 38-year-old Malaysian entrepreneur who invented the pen drive.
Established in November 2000 in Hsinchu, Taiwan, Phison shipped 556 million units of NAND Flash controller in 2011.
Mr Pua currently runs the company that has 580 employees, including 50 Malaysian engineers.
En. Zuhairi Mohmad the Director Corporate Services NCIA, representing Dato’ Redza Rafiq, said the endeavor is estimated to bring in almost RM60 million in the next five years.
"We are proud to have a collaboration with Phison, a global renowned company and innovator of the world’s first USB or commonly known as a pen drive. It is more encouraging to note that the man behind this great innovation is a Malaysian, Mr Pua Khein-Seng," he said.
A part of that initiative will increase the development of flash-drive technology R&D in Koridor Utara, which in the future may be a key contributor in Malaysia LED Cluster.
"NCIA greatly support Phison in this initiative, and is proud to be able to engage Phison Electronics with Malaysian Institutions of Higher Learning for the Innovation Workshop which will help to expedite not only, in the technology transfer but also in the effort of talent transfer to Malaysia," said Dato’ Redza Rafiq.
The project has gained the support of Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (MIDA) as part of the main focus area under the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP).
Dato’ Redza Rafiq said NCIA believes in the capabilities of Phisontech Electronic Malaysia Sdn Bhd in transforming the Electric & Electronic Industry ( E & E) in Koridor Utara, moving it into a high income region.
"Thus, to make Malaysia into a high income country with the comprehensive range of services, which cater to the needs of the industry, from nurturing technology start-up incubators, quality support infrastructure, and enabling facilities, for innovation and technology development," he added.
The opening of the Centre will enable Phison Electronics to also train and develop Malaysian engineering talent and to conduct more research and development on IC’s and systems targeting global market from Malaysia.
This is to define, develop and adopt “Innovated in Malaysia” solutions.
The establishment of the Centre comes on the heel of the strategic collaboration with Northern Corridor Implementation Authority in May where they announced the Creative Design Competition of Pen Drive casing for their new range of thumb drives.
