MAI HOLDS TECHNOLOGY ROUNDTABLE TO ENHANCE COMPETITIVENESS OF THE LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
Wednesday 11/07/2012
KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- A total of 40 representatives consisting of industry captains from the local and foreign manufacturers and suppliers, as well as academicians from various universities encouragingly responded to Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) call for a preliminary discussion to develop an “Automotive Technology Roadmap” for the nation, held on Tuesday 10th July. The round table discussion, held at MAI headquarters, began with a presentation by the CEO of MAI, M Madani Sahari, proposing an approach towards developing the roadmap which shall now be recognised as the “Malaysia Automotive Technology Roadmap”, or MATR in short.
Emphasis is now given by the government to develop Malaysia towards becoming a major player in the production of “green” energy efficient vehicles (EEV) for the region, without neglecting the importance to continuously encouraging the advancement and to “green” the current internal combustion engine vehicles being produced by the nation. The soon to be released “Green Automotive Industry Roadmap” or GAIR, as part of the National Automotive Policy (NAP), shall provide the pathway guiding the nation automotive industrialist to embark on the EEV industrial endeavours. Suffice to say that in anticipation of the global EEV advancement the government’s agenda is to prepare the Malaysia automotive industrial community to initiate the development of relevant technologies and industrial capabilities to participate in the EEV production in the near future. The MATR is therefore a subset of GAIR focusing on guiding the nation entrepreneurs, industrialists, academicians and R&D community in prioritising their businesses and technology development spheres.
The MATR development is expected to take a year to complete requiring numerous discussions at various levels amongst the automotive community, namely; the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the vendors community and associations, related components and parts manufacturers, materials suppliers, amongst academicians and R&D community, aftersales service community, related inter ministries and related inter government departments. Inputs from all levels of the automotive community are crucial in ensuring a comprehensive development of the MATR charting the nation technology pursues which is unanimously endorsed by all parties concerned for the benefit of the local automotive industry in the future.
The Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI), an agency under the Ministry of International Trade & Industry (MITI), was set up to serve as the focal point & coordination centre for the development of the local automotive industry in all matters related to automotive industry, including analysis and recommendation of automotive related policies; managing manpower, technology and supply chain development and coordinating outreach activities.
