JOHOR YACHTING ASSOCIATION BACKS MALAYSIAN MATCH RACING CIRCUIT

Tuesday 18/09/2012

KUALA LUMPUR, September 18 (Bernama) --

Local match racers vying for the sole spot for a Malaysian representative at this year’s Monsoon Cup have another reason to rejoice as the success of the Malaysian Match Racing Circuit (MMRC) has prompted Johor Yachting Association to organize a bonus round of the circuit in Tanjong Leman, Mersing, Johor.

The event will take place on 28-30 September and will be the third stage of the circuit, with the final stage taking place in Pulau Duyong, Terengganu on 28-30 November. The top six teams return for their chance at the RM15,000.00 cash prize offered at this stage.

The MMRC kicked off in May at the Royal Malaysian Naval Base, Tg. Muroh, Lumut, Perak on 11-13 May, followed by Marina Jabatan Laut, Pulau Indah, Klang, Selangor on 29 June- 1 July which saw Jeremy Koo (KFC Malaysia/KRT) emerging champion at both events. Jeremy is now one win away from qualifying as the national champion, winning the spot at the Monsoon Cup.

“We are on top form at this stage, having won the last two events, however it keeps getting challenging as we move from one venue to the other. This event will be raced in the Foundation 36 yachts, which are the same boats used in the Monsoon Cup. These boats are bigger that the platus used at the first two events and poses its own challenges on top of the conditions at Tg.Leman,” said Jeremy.

Director of T-Best Events and Vice President of MYA, Dato’ Wan Hisham Wan Salleh said, “The MMRC is the answer to the future of sailing in Malaysia as it is the next step in developing the progress of young sailors who are forced to retire early due to the lack of keelboat events. It is also the answer to the vision of the Ministry of Youth and Sports to industrialise the sport of sailing and create our own local team of match racing officers and umpires.”

He added, “The MMRC has already started delivering the results expected with the two events completed and as we progress, we our hope that other states will join in is already coming true with the support form Johor. The MMRC has proven that it is a major boost to develop match racing in Malaysia, improving our sailors’ ranking worldwide.”
