PRINCE COURT MEDICAL CENTRE ACHIEVES HIMSS LEVEL 6 CERTIFICATION

Thursday 20/09/2012

Hospital receives global recognition for electronic medical record system adoption

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 (Bernama) -- Prince Court Medical Centre has added another feather to its cap by becoming the first hospital in Malaysia to implement the Bar Coded Medication Administration (BCMA) system to prevent human errors in the administration and distribution of prescription medications to its patients.

Malaysia is the third joint country with India in South-East Asia to have introduced the BCMA system to ensure its patients receive correct medications at the correct time by electronically validating and documenting medications prescribed by doctors.

With the system in place, Prince Court has also become Malaysia’s first hospital to have achieved Stage 6 certification of HIMSS Analytics’ Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model. HIMSS Analytics is a non-profit unit of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). It provides quality data and analytical expertise to support improved decision-making for healthcare providers, healthcare IT companies and consulting firms.

An award to recognise this achievement was presented by HIMSS Analytics to the hospital on September 18 in Singapore.

Prince Court’s managing director Dr Chong Su-Lin said: “We are proud to be the first hospital in Malaysia to have received the HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 certification. The path to achieving this was not easy, but we were driven by our commitment to raise the standards of our patient care and safety.”

The BCMA process was introduced at Prince Court together with Cerner Asia, a global leader in healthcare information technology. A critical component for a closed-loop medication administration, the system uses handheld barcode readers to scan a patient’s wristband and medication to validate information with the patient’s electronic health record. The validation steps will provide full protection of patient safety in medication delivery, without compromising patient privacy.

Dr Chong said the closed-loop medication administration process was important to the way the hospital delivered health care to its patients as it enabled caregivers to access all clinical information at the point of care and ensure the five “rights” of medication administration - right patient, right medication, right dosage, right time, and right route.

Prince Court, she added, had ensured two additional “rights” “ right documentation and right response.

“With the seven “rights” put in place, our commitment to and compliance with standardised and new workflows will be ongoing,” she said, adding that education on the importance of scanning all medication would now be a primary focus at the hospital.
