KUALA LUMPUR, Oct. 16 (Bernama) --

PETRONAS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with OPITO towards collaboration in the area of safety, technical training and strategic competency development.

The MOU was signed on 15 October 2012 at the PETRONAS Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur by PETRONAS’ Vice President of Human Resource Management Puan Raiha Azni Abdul Rahman and OPITO’s Group Chief Executive Mr David Doig.

Under the scope of the MOU, OPITO will assess and accredit selected health, safety and environment (HSE) and technical training programmes offered by Institut Teknologi Petroleum PETRONAS (INSTEP) and PETRONAS’ Group Health, Safety and Environment Division (GHSED).

“In realising our aspiration to become the regional education and learning hub for the oil and gas industry, we acknowledge the importance of our HSE and technical training programmes to be recognised by an industry recognized accreditation body. In pursuing the intent, we have identified OPITO as our partner for the upstream sector,” said Puan Raiha Azni.

“With OPITO’s assessment on the selected programmes under INSTEP and PETRONAS’ GHSED, we can set the training standards and ensure adoption of the best practices,” she added.

The scope of the MOU also includes strategic competency development via learning visits, staff attachments, student internships and network access.

The partnership between PETRONAS and OPITO is hoped to further enable the rapid inculcation of safety culture within the technical workforce for the oil and gas industry.

OPITO is a non-profit skills organisation wholly owned by the oil and gas industry with the primary objective of helping global oil and gas industry build a safe, skilled and competent workforce. OPITO standards, qualifications and workforce development frameworks are currently used by employers in over 40 countries.
