NTT COMMUNICATIONS OPENS DISASTER-RESILIENT OSAKA 5 DATA CENTER

Monday 18/01/2016

-Full-scale disaster-recovery solutions for business continuity planning in Kansai-

TOKYO, Jan 18 (Bernama-BUSINESS WIRE) -- NTT Communications Corporation (NTT Com), the ICT solutions and international communications business within the NTT (NYSE: NTT) Group, announced today the immediate launch of the Osaka 5 Data Center in the heart of Osaka, NTT Com’s fifth data center in central Japan’s Kansai Region. The facility offers approximately 3,500 m2 of server room, equivalent to 1,600 racks.

Osaka 5 Data Center, which has a dedicated for data-center building comprising 11 floors, is the newest addition to NTT Com’s Nexcenter™ data center service, which combines extensive disaster countermeasures and ideal network environments to enable NTT Com’s customers to accelerate their business development with confidence and efficiency. Please see the attachment for more details.

Full-scale disaster-recovery for ensured business continuity planning

Osaka 5 Data Center is fully equipped for disaster recovery to minimize the impact of any envisioned disaster in Osaka, including earthquake, tsunami or flood in the event of a major tremor in the Nankai Trough.

In the unlikely event that water were to reach the data center, equipment would continue to operate safely because the electric power equipment, communication facilities, server rooms and other important facilities are located on the second floor or above, over seven meters above ground level. The building’s seismic-isolation device, which lessens the impact of strong shaking by the earthquake, is installed on the post beneath the second floor to ensure that it would work properly if water were to enter the building’s first floor. In addition seismic damper, which suppresses the vertical shaking by the epicentral earthquake, is also installed.

Electricity is sourced from separate power substations for extra-highly reliable power supply. The facility is connected directly to a large quakeproof communication cable tunnel that is designed to protect cables from damage due to earthquakes as well as road construction.

The Osaka 5 Data Center provides rental office space with back-up power to enable customers to manage BCP solutions easily.

Ideal network environment

To ensure that customers have uninterrupted access to a high-quality and low-latency network environment, the Osaka 5 Data Center is connected directly to the NTT Com’s major data center in western Japan, which accommodates Internet exchange (IX), via optical fiber run through cable tunnels.

In addition to NTT Com’s high-speed, high-volume Internet backbone and network services, including the Arcstar Universal One virtual private network, customers can use the data center to build seamless ICT environments combining cloud services with data centers worldwide.

Also, from this March, a new secure, low-latency data center connection service will enable customers to use NTT Com’s five data centers in Osaka city as if they were one facility. The service will offer up to 10Gbps best-effort circuits or optical fibers.

Low-cost operations realized by adopting high-efficiency equipment

The Osaka 5 Data Center offers the lower cost services among NTT Com data centers in Osaka. This is possible because of the facility’s exceptional efficiency. To reduce power consumption of cooling, NTT Com has pioneered the adoption of efficient cooling wall which blows cold air in the server room, in addition to using indirect outside air cooling.

NTT Com has steadily expanded its data centers and related services, mainly in the Tokyo metropolitan area, to meet the booming demand for data center services in Japan. At the same time, however, customers have been increasingly seeking backup sites in western Japan, which is far enough from Tokyo to serve BCP purposes in the event of a natural disaster. Furthermore, needs for data center services are increasing among financial institutions and manufacturers headquartered in the region.
