Taman Segar Residents Benefit from Community Initiative by PETRONAS
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS is transforming communities one step at a time through a new initiative called #FUELLINGCOMMUNITIES, which rewards communities for supporting the PETRONAS brand. The inaugural programme, which was launched late last year in collaboration with the Taman Segar Rukun Tetangga in Cheras, had recently achieved its first out of three milestones.
“#FUELLINGCOMMUNITIES is a fresh and innovative approach at forging smart partnerships with the local community. The initiative has paid off well for both PETRONAS and the Taman Segar Rukun Tetangga, with around 130 volunteers from the company participating in a
gotong-royong with residents to beautify the 44-year-old Rukun Tetangga building,” said Shaharuddin Muhammad Sidek, Head of Retail Business Division, PETRONAS Dagangan Berhad (PDB).
“As a brand that fuels communities, we are committed to giving back in the areas where our businesses operate by rewarding them with unique propositions from time-to-time. This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for choosing PETRONAS as their Brand of 1
st Choice.”
Residents were awarded one community point (CP) for every RM30 worth of fuel purchased from PETRONAS Station Taman Segar and worked towards achieving a set number of CPs to redeem the rewards offered on a “Deed-o-Meter”. In addition, small individual rewards were also given to residents in the form of knick-knacks and snacks for every five and 10 CPs collected on a stamp card.
The accumulated CPs were updated daily and displayed at the LED screens installed at the service station and at the Rukun Tetangga building, to ensure that the community remain updated on the progress and continue to be encouraged to achieve their targets.
The first joint activity between PETRONAS and Taman Segar residents involved the repainting of the Rukun Tetangga building. Further activities in the pipeline include installing facilities at the Rukun Tetangga building compound and conducting the PETRONAS StreetSmart road safety programme at Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Segar.
Taman Segar Rukun Tetangga committee head Hwang Wei Ming, 71, commended PETRONAS for the opportunity to enhance the quality of life of residents in the neighbourhood.
"The campaign is a good platform for us to voice out our needs and to improve the neighbourhood's facilities. We are pleased with the outcome of the first activity, which has given a fresh new look to the Rukun Tetangga building. I hope that there will be further opportunities in the future to collaborate with PETRONAS," he said.
Resident Chua Hock, 71, hopes that the awareness created by the campaign will encourage more people from the community to step up and join in the Rukun Tetangga's community building efforts.
"It's not every day that we have a corporate organisation looking into our needs. I am heartened by the efforts put in by both PETRONAS and residents in creating mutual benefit for the community," he said.
Other than #FUELLINGCOMMUNITIES, PDB also supports communities through its flagship corporate social responsibility programmes, namely PETRONAS StreetSmart – a collaboration with PETROSAINS that brings interactive road safety programmes to schools nationwide and Water For Life – an initiative that provides assistance in the form of basic water infrastructure to rural communities without access to piped water supply.
