PETALING JAYA, Feb 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian Game Developers have been trying to get funding through many ways such as grants, seed money, VCs and even loans from Banks to develop their games. It is very encouraging to see Game Entrepreneurs being independent to seek their own ways and means to get funding and a few have been trying their luck via crowdfunding portal, Kickstarter.
Education game developer, ACE EdVenture Studio is taking its first feature game ChemCaper Act I: Petticles in Peril to Kickstarter and Steam Greenlight. In an effort to bring the game to as many kids as possible including locations without the internet access. The campaign on the popular crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter started on the 11 January 2016 and will be used to find backers for the game’s PC version.
ChemCaper is set to be the world’s first Chemistry RPG which will allow for kids ages 10-14 to be introduced to the subject even before they learn about it in school. With Chemistry being presented on an RPG platform, kids will be able to engage with the topic on their own terms, through play and exploration.
The mobile version of ChemCaper has created waves in the industry after being featured at Google I/O ’15 in San Francisco last May 2015 and many other great articles by the foreign medias as one of the games to look out for.
“It started with our teachers lamenting that if only our students could get as excited about the sciences and maths as our teachers are.”, said Anne Tham, CEO & Group Founder.
Another Malaysian game studio, Weeev, had their English-language visual novel titled Purrfectly Ever After successfully funded on Kickstarter just last year (July 2015). The crowdfunding campaign was so successful that it raised close to twice it’s original funding target and achieved five additional stretch goals for extra game content, songs and even voice work. The game will be released for mobile devices this year, while the PC version will be appearing on the Steam digital distribution platform shortly after that.
Crowdfunding portal like kickstarter is also a good platform to promote for Malaysia has a huge potential to be the game hub in South East Asia, with the majority of game companies (61%) involved in the industry being game developers. As South East Asia is an important region for export, games produced by game companies from within Malaysia would resonate well with other regions due its cultural and language familiarities," said Hasnul Hadi Samsudin, Director of Creative Multimedia Division at MDeC.
