KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 (Bernama) -- The International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF) and Malaysia Major Events (MME), a division of the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), are thrilled to announce that Malaysia will be playing host to the 2019 IWWF Waterski World Championship happening at Putrajaya come August 2019.
Organised by the Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (MWWF), the sporting event is expected to attract 1,400 international and 2,000 local attendees over the 7-day event to be held from 12 to 18 August, 2019.
The Waterski World Championship will see participants compete in three disciplines, which are Slalom, Jump and Figures. The Slalom discipline requires competitors to ski around six buoys and the skier who rounds the most number of buoys with the shortest rope is the winner. In the Jump discipline, the best skier will jump more than 70 metres, for men, and more than 56 metres, for women, with the longest jump being the win. Those performing Figures will have to execute the greatest number of tricks in two passes of 20 seconds. The skier with the highest aggregate score is the winner.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on bringing the event to Malaysia was signed last week at the sidelines of the SportAccord Convention that took place in Switzerland last week.
"MME has been very supportive of the Malaysian Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (MWWF) as well as the entire watersports fraternity. In the past, Malaysia hosted the 2011 Sarawak Wakeboard World Cup and 2009 Putrajaya Waterski World Cup. It is exciting that we are able to see yet another major water sport event being held in the administration capital of Putrajaya. Apart from attracting foreign and domestic tourism, we also hope that the IWWF Waterski World Championship will boost awareness of water sports in Malaysia and create a legacy to young athletes in the country," said Tony Nagamaiah, General Manager of MyCEB's Malaysia Major Events (MME) Division.
The championship was previously held in Guadalajara, Mexico in November 2015 that saw 300 athletes from 45 participating countries. It also recorded 200,000 spectators. Prior to that, the event was held in Santiago, Chile in November 2013, whereby 260 athletes participated from 34 countries.
Putrajaya's hosting of the 2019 IWWF Waterski World Championship just adds to the portfolio of events held there, such as the recent IRONMAN 70.3 challenge, Putrajaya International Hot-Air Balloon Fiesta, Royal Flora international flower and garden showcase, and many others.
