KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Talent Development rider, Ramdan Rosli’s hopes of putting up a strong performance having qualified ninth in Round 2 of the Moto2 European Championship did not materialize as he finished 13th in Race 1 and 17th in Race 2 at Motorland Aragon in Spain last weekend.

In Race 1 PETRONAS AHM Malaysia rider showed a promising pace to battle it out with the top-10 in the opening stages but dropped down to 13th in lap-7 having ran wide at Turn 1 due to gearing issues. From there, he tried to close the gap with the leaders but given the technical difficulties, all he could do was maintain his position and cross the finish line in 29’43.997s.

Russia’s Steven Odendaal won the 15-lap race in 29’08.156s after an intense battle with runner-ups Tetsuta Nagashima and Alan Trecher.

Meanwhile Race 2 that took place on Sunday evening was red-flagged and restarted with 10-laps after a huge crash at the start of the back straight involving Xavi Cardelus, Michael Aquino, Jocopo Cretaro and Thibaut Gourin. The crash caused a huge explosion right next to Ramdan but he escaped it unharmed.

In the shortened race, Ramdan did not get a good start and lost a position in the opening lap. He held to 10th for the next four tours before the gear malfunctioned again, forcing him to tumble down the order to 21st. Not willing to give up, Ramdan did the best he could and recovered four places before wrapping up the race in 19’52.657s 17th.

At the front, Odendaal took his second back-to-back victory in 19’18.683s ahead of Techer and Nagashima.

Round 3 of the Mot2 European Championship will be hosted at Circuito de Barcelona – Catalunya on 11th and 12th June, right after the Catalan Grand Prix this weekend where Ramdan will be making a wildcard appearance alongside compatriot Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS Raceline Malaysia).

I was very confident in Race 1 because we had a good pace but it was quite unfortunate we encountered issues with the gear shifter. It worked well during practice and qualifying sessions but during the race I could not engage the higher gear. Worst of all it would kick into neutral which caused me to run wide at several turns.

As for Race 2, again I tried my best to fight for the top position. Unfortunately the gearing issue repeated itself in lap-5, albeit less frequent. If the race was a bit longer, I could have finished in the points. I am sorry to have disappointed the team and sponsors and I hope to do well for the next race in Catalunya.

Kenny Chua, PETRONAS AHM Malaysia team manager

It was disappointing weekend for us. The team worked really hard trying to resolve the gear issues but made little progress. If not for that, I believe Ramdan could have secured strong results as he had a good pace in the practice and qualifying. On the other hand I am happy to see these issues have done very little to dampen Ramdan’s fighting spirit. Despite the obstacles thrown his way, he never gave up and kept pushing hard.
