KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- Parkway Cancer Center in collaboration with Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad will be hosting the ‘Fight against Cancer with Immunotherapy’ Seminar which is open to the public’s participation on 25th June 2016 in Kuala Lumpur from 9am to 1pm.
The educational seminar against cancer is aimed at creating awareness of new insights into the treatment of oncology patients and their Cancer Journey.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Globocan of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the incidence of cancer in Malaysia increased from 32,000 new cases in 2008 to 37,400 in 2012. This number is expected to rise to 56,932 by 2025 if no action is taken. Mortality due to cancer stood at 20,100 deaths in 2008 and has increased to 21,700 deaths in 2012.
Currently, the estimated number of Malaysians who are living with cancer at any one time is, 90,000 to 100,000 with less than 10% of cancers happening in children compared to over 50% in men and 35% in women aged 50 and above.
About 100,000 Malaysians suffer from cancer each year, with the most being women and it is estimated that one in four Malaysians (1:4) will develop cancer by 75 years old, and the number of cancer cases is expected to increase 15 percent by 2020.
According to the National Cancer Society Malaysia, cancer is becoming a leading cause of death and it is estimated that nearly 40% of all cancers are preventable with lifestyle modifications, including colorectal, lung and cervical cancers, with smaller effects in breast and nasopharyngeal cancer. Improvement in early detection and treatment are also important and will lead to better survival rates.
