AKAMAI RELEASES SECOND QUARTER 2016 STATE OF THE INTERNET / SECURITY REPORT

Wednesday 21/09/2016

Businesses and Governments at Risk as Increasingly Simple Access to Launch Tools lead to Higher Frequency Of Cyber Attacks

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- As some countries around the world mark Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, Akamai Technologies’ latest findings show a pattern of increasing attacks on a global scale. Akamai Technologies’ Q2 2016 State of the Internet – Security Report released today, observes the largest DDoS attack tracked in recent reports, peaking at 363 Gigabits per second (Gbps). This comes as more web application and DDoS attacks than ever before as well as harmful traffic from bots are noted in the same time frame.

Akamai, as the global leader in Content Delivery Network (CDN) services, is making the Internet fast, reliable and secure for all customers.

From Akamai’s Q2 2016 State of the Internet – Security Report, there has been a decrease in the size of the attacks however Akamai continues to see a rise in the number of attacks at a global level. Malaysia, as a global trading nation and a regional hub for manufacturing, financial services and data center operations, has particular interest in this trend as it has also been noted that launch tools for attacks of these kinds are becoming increasing pervasive and easy to use. This in turn means that businesses and government assets are increasingly vulnerable to potentially higher frequencies of attacks.

According to Martin McKeay, Editor-in- Chief, State of the Internet/Security Report, “While attack sizes are decreasing, we continue to see an uptick in the number of attacks as launch tools grow increasingly pervasive and easy to use and monetize. This commoditization renders businesses vulnerable to a higher frequency of attacks they can’t defend against on their own. As we look toward Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, it is important for organizations to understand what they are up against, specifically as adversaries increasingly threaten DDoS attacks for ransom.”

During Q2 2016, Akamai has mitigated 21 mega attacks that exceeded 30 million packets per second (Mbps), setting a new quarterly record. The previous record was set in Q2 2015 (18 attacks > 30 Mbps)

Key trends noted in this quarter include:
  • Increased DDoS attacks from Q1 2016 to Q2 2016
  • The gaming industry has been the most targeted industry for the past two quarters
  • Significant reduction in median attach bandwidth
  • 77% of web applications attacks were launched over HTTP rather than HTTPS
