REGIONAL EXPERT REVEALS LOCATION-BASED ANALYTICS A GAME CHANGER FOR MALAYSIA'S BIG DATA SPACE

Tuesday 04/10/2016

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 4 (BERNAMA) -- The country’s vision to make Malaysia a regional Big Data Analytics hub by 2020 has created a growing appetite for location-based analytics, a renowned industry leader said.

“Big data streams in at high volume and velocity, and the ability to effectively harness and derive actionable value from big data is very important to many organizations,” Esri South Asia Managing Director Leslie Wong said.

“As organisations run more and more analytics on their data, there’s a fast growing interest to visualize results spatially on a map to find location-based relationships.

“Analysts and decision-makers are looking for more insights that can only be discovered through location-framed perspectives.”

Location-based analytics is an approach being used by an increasing number of Malaysia’s government organisations and commercial enterprises to integrate and analyse data from multiple business systems. The technology opens up a dynamic map-based view of information, allowing users to unearth relationships, patterns, and trends that would not have been obvious have in tabular view or purely numerical metrics.

“Regionally, the uptake of location-based analytics has largely been driven cities with smart city goals,” Mr Wong said.

“Among these cities are Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Iskandar, Singapore, Jakarta and many others, which have used the approach to deliver impactful community development programs, safer neighbourhoods and efficient government services among others.

By harnessing data collected and managed by city departments, planners and city officials are able to transform government services, operations, and even policies.”

“As an example, if city health departments need to understand how a disease is spreading, they need to be aware of where the population is clustered, their demographic lifestyles, and what their current environment is like. These are location related problems that are best understood when data is visualized on an intelligent map for active collaboration.”

“Taking a location-based analytics approach would enable hospitals and local health authorities to better allocate resources and create targeted programs in areas where it is most needed by the community.”

Similarly, the location intelligence can help with the analysis of congestion of passenger-crowding on public buses and taxi trips during peak hours and commuter travel patterns, this enables the improvement of public transport programmes and enhance commuter satisfaction.

Mr Wong will share more about big data trends and how location-based analytics is transforming organisations in Malaysia at the upcoming Esri Malaysia User Conference happening on 18-19 October in the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
