SEVEN MALAYSIA HOME-GROWN TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES FORM MALAYSIA IOT CONSORTIUM (MYIOTC) AND CO-SPONSOR NATION'S FIRST IOT HACKATHON

Monday 14/11/2016

PENANG, Nov 14 (Bernama) --  Seven Malaysian homegrown technology companies today announced the formation of the Malaysia IoT Consortium (MyIoTC) and launched the MyIoTC Week 2016. The seven companies are SilTerra, Cytron, CEEDtec, K-One, Eclimo, Pensonic and Exabytes.

A broad spectrum of applications associated with the Internet of Things (IoT) is considered as key contributors for the future of the Internet Economy. While today’s internet economy is based on data created by internet of 3 billion people, the new IoT world is about data created by internet of 50 billion things by 2020. In economic terms, it’s estimated that $14.4 trillion of economic value will be created by IoT between 2013 and 2022, and McKinsey expects $4-$11 trillion of economic value will be created per year in 2025. Among the biggest application opportunities for IoT are in the Manufacturing sector and Smart Cities.

“We are glad that Malaysia is being recognized as a good research and development base for IoT solutions. With the large potential user base for IoT solutions, especially in manufacturing and smart cities, IoT is a unique opportunity for Malaysia, and it is great to witness these seven companies collaborating to leverage on that opportunity,” said Dato Yasmin Mahmood, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

Dato Lai Yit Loong, who is the MyIoTC Lead Coordinator and Silterra’s Senior VP of Sales and Marketing says, “SilTerra is proud to be one of the founding members of MyIoTC. With deep capabilities and track record in developing and manufacturing Integrated Circuits (IC) which are widely used in IoT applications such as smart watches, wearables, smart homes, RFID and smart meters all over the world, SilTerra is committed to work with government agencies, research institutions and local technology companies to build and further develop the Malaysian IoT ecosystems.”

Since IoT solutions market is highly fragmented, it’s unrealistic that anyone would be able to do everything themselves. Thus, the MyIoTC members decided to work as a team, bringing unique value propositions and resources to the table, complementing instead of competing with each other. As a private sector initiative, MyIoTC intends to drive the IoT development and deployment together with relevant government agencies, to make Malaysia the IoT R&D, manufacturing, competency hub for the region.

MyIoTC will focus on six main areas as described below:

Idea Generation – IoT solutions is targeted at creating new values or solving old problems faced by specific industry. The Consortium seeks to create a platform and program where people of diverse backgrounds and industries can share their ideas and in collaboration with MyIoTC, further develop these ideas into compelling products and services.

Prototyping – As the members are part of the high-tech industry, they are equipped with unique hardware and software technologies, skills and resources that will help customers quickly create prototypes as well as validate their IoT ideas. Customers can utilize the offered services in two ways, in which they could source components through MyIoTC or outsource the entire prototyping project to MyIoTC.

Industrial Design – One of the biggest challenges of hardware projects is industrial design. 5 of the Consortium members are successful product companies with extensive experience and track record in industrial and consumer product design.

Mass Production – IoT systems are highly customized to specific industries with a service focused instead of hardware focused revenue model. MyIoTC is very well positioned for the new IoT opportunities as they are flexible to grow together with their IoT customers, giving them the advantage over their competitors.

Sales and Marketing, Distribution, Branding – With an extensive sales and distribution network, the Consortium is able help their IoT customers bring their products and services to the market. The customers can leverage on the consortium’s existing resources to accelerate their brand building and market penetration.

IoT Market Place – MyIoTC is building a strong online market place platform to promote the Consortium’s offerings, as well as to engage organisations to help reinvent their companies and industries to deploy IoT solutions. The market place is a platform to bring together various solution providers, suppliers and customers as it will have a built-in e-commerce and analytics engine which helps customers launch their IoT service on this platform.

With a clear cut focus, I believe that MyIoTC will be a key player in driving the development and growth of the IoT ecosystem in Malaysia and be able to turn the platform into a locally created and hosted hub for the IoT ecosystem. The Consortium will be a significant contributor to the growth of Malaysia’s Internet Economy” added Dato’ Yasmin Mahmood.

The formation of MyIoTC also marked the launch of ‘MyIoTC Week 2016’, in partnership with KDU, Microchip, Kerlink and Orbiwise. This will be the first public event to promote “Digital Maker Movement” and to drive innovations of IoT applications for Smart City. The Week will have free seminars and workshops on the latest technologies and trends in IoT, with the support from MDEC and Invest Penang. Engineering undergraduates, working engineers, technology companies, maker communities and even businesses looking for IoT solutions are encouraged to be part of these.

A 24-hour IoT Hackathon will be held to celebrate MyIoTC. The Hackathon will take place at the end of MyIoTC Week Penang and will explore a new emerging technology in IoT - LoRa.

Cytron will be leading the technical committee for MyIoTC week and Hackathon. Aside from providing the latest LoRa nodes (devices), Cytron will also link up with International companies to setup a complete working LoRa system for this event and deployment for Malaysia in the near future.
