AKAMAI RELEASES THIRD QUARTER 2016 STATE OF THE INTERNET / SECURITY REPORT - HIGHLIGHTS INCREASED IOT CONCERNS

Monday 21/11/2016

Q3 report highlights a 138 percent YoY increase in total DDoS attacks greater than 100 Gbps with two record DDoS attacks caused by the Mirai Botnet
Web application attacks decreased by 18 percent YoY; 20 percent of all web application attacks in Q3 originated from the United States

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 (Bernama) -- The prevalence of growing numbers of IoT (Internet of Things) devices is the latest trend adding to global cyber security concerns and needs. This was among Akamai Technologies’ latest findings that demonstrate a drastic change in possible attack styles and approaches as demonstrated by the recent global incident known as the ‘Mirai botnet’.

Akamai Technologies’ Q3 2016 State of the Internet – Security Report released today, has a range of key trends that are making their mark on global technology and business practices and infrastructure – including the largest DDoS attack tracked in recent reports, peaking at 623 Gigabits per second (Gbps).

Two key pieces of particular interest however were:
  • While 66 percent of web application attacks targeted US sites, 3 percent targeted businesses in Malaysia!
  • Web application attack metrics measured around major sporting events suggest malicious actors may take time off to watch their favorite teams. For example, on the day that France played Portugal in the European soccer championship, there was a 95 percent decrease in attacks sourcing from Portugal (20 attacks) as opposed to a day one month later (392 attacks). On the same day in France, there were 50,597 attacks as compared to 158,003 one month later – a 68 percent difference.

Key Findings

Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the global leader in content delivery network (CDN) services, recently its Third Quarter, 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report. The report, using data gathered from the Akamai Intelligent Platform, provides analysis of the current cloud security and threat landscape, including insight into two record‑setting DDoS attacks caused by the Mirai botnet.

The ‘Mirai Botnet’ incident demonstrated a radically different style of cyber intrusion that highlighted the need for device manufacturers to place greater emphasis on security. It also underscored the need for businesses and public sector infrastructure providers to be ever more vigilant in the defence of their connected assets and infrastructure as the proliferation of mobile and IoT devices that access protected and public networks continues to grow.

The Mirai botnet also made concrete the industry’s fear that Internet of Things and other Internet connected devices could be used for both web application and DDoS attacks, illustrating the need for device manufacturers to place a greater emphasis on security.

The data from Akamai’s Q3 2016 State of the Internet – Security Report, also shows that while there has been a slight decrease in the number of individual incidences of attacks being seen, it has been noted that larger attacks are being carried out instead. The upcoming holiday period – a time traditionally favoured by attackers – is expected to see that trend accelerate.

Key trends noted in this quarter’s report include:
  • 71 percent increase in DDoS attacks since Q2 2016
  • DDoS attack activity at a glance globally:
- During Q3 2016, Akamai mitigated 19 mega attacks that exceeded 100 Gbps
- There was an average of 30 DDoS attacks per target in Q3 2016 with the highest number reaching 427 attacks targeted at a single organization
