Third Quarter, 2016 State of the Internet / Security Report. The report, using data gathered from the
Akamai Intelligent Platform, provides analysis of the current cloud security and threat landscape, including insight into two record‑setting DDoS attacks caused by the Mirai botnet.
The ‘Mirai Botnet’ incident demonstrated a radically different style of cyber intrusion that highlighted the need for device manufacturers to place greater emphasis on security. It also underscored the need for businesses and public sector infrastructure providers to be ever more vigilant in the defence of their connected assets and infrastructure as the proliferation of mobile and IoT devices that access protected and public networks continues to grow.
The Mirai botnet also made concrete the industry’s fear that Internet of Things and other Internet connected devices could be used for both web application and DDoS attacks, illustrating the need for device manufacturers to place a greater emphasis on security.
The data from Akamai’s
Q3 2016 State of the Internet – Security Report, also shows that while there has been a slight decrease in the number of individual incidences of attacks being seen, it has been noted that larger attacks are being carried out instead. The upcoming holiday period – a time traditionally favoured by attackers – is expected to see that trend accelerate.
