MTC TO ENHANCE TIMBER SUPPLY CHAIN
Thursday 24/11/2016
The Malaysian Timber Council organizes a Resource and Business Mission to South America for the first time in search of new sources for raw material and business opportunities
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 24 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Timber Council is mounting a Resource and Business Mission to Chile and Brazil from 26 November - 6 December 2016. The mission is part of the Council’s Raw Material Augmenting Supply programme which helps local timber-based manufacturers have a steady source of supply.
This is MTC’s first Resource and Business Mission to South America. The delegation, comprising eight timber-based companies, will be led by MTC Deputy CEO Richard Yu. Members of the mission will be visiting timber plantation hubs in Concepcion and Los Angeles in the Bio Bio Region, Chile, as well as Curitiba in the State of Parana, Brazil.
The delegation will source for tropical timber products as well as plantation timber products for downstream processing in Peninsular Malaysia.
“MTC is always looking for new sources of timber supply for our local manufacturers. We also want to introduce new timber species in the market which can be used as an alternative supply of raw material. This will value-add and diversify our product range,” said MTC CEO Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Nik.
Members of the delegation will also be visiting factories to learn about the timber processing practices in these two countries. They will also be seeking new business opportunities in Chile and Brazil as these countries produce tropical timber species whose properties are similar to that of Malaysian hardwoods.
Among the alternative timber supply that are being sourced are Taeda Pine sawntimber, Eucalyptus veneer and tropical timbers such as Ipe, Jatoba and Cumaru.
