SEMINAR ON SUCCESSFUL AGEING : 'MOBILIZING COMMUNITIES TOWARDS ELDERLY WELLBEING'

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 (Bernama) -- The population of the elderly who are 60 years old and above in Malaysia is increasing gradually from standing about 7.9% in 2016, to an estimation of 15% in 2030.
With an aim to develop and enhance the policies and programmes for the elderly in Malaysia, the Department of Social Welfare (DSW) of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (MWFCD), has officially agreed to collaborate with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to jointly implement the project namely ‘Successful Ageing: Social Support System and Community Based Programmes in Malaysia’ for two years, i.e. from January 2016 until January 2018.
As one of the core activities in the said Project, a national seminar was held from 12 to 13 October 2016 at the Institute Social Malaysia. It has been officiated by the Minister of MWFCD, the Honourable Dato’ Sri Rohani Abdul Karim.
The seminar has attracted a sum of about 300 audiences from various public, educational and non-government organizations nationwide. Key resources persons from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Japan were invited to deliver their finding papers. Topics such as elderly care system in Singapore, Thailand and Japan were presented. Views and experiences were also actively exchanged among the audiences.
