PRIMARY SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATORS' TRAINING FOR AFRICAN COUNTRIES

Wednesday 30/11/2016

- Quality Education Through Hands-on Training -

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 30 (Bernama) -- Providing quality education is one of major challenges in Africa. The 6th Tokyo International Conference for African Development (TICAD VI) held at Nairobi, Kenya in this August has affirmed this agenda. Among others, mathematics and science education leads to human resource development for industry. In order to teach abstract concepts of the subject, a shift should take place from knowledge-crammed lessons to problem solving method which students acquire skills of finding and solving problems by themselves.

In August 2016, SEAMEO-RECSAM*, a regional center based in Penang City of Malaysia, has implemented a three-week training course on primary science and mathematics educators’ training for African countries. The training course was attended by twenty four participants from six countries, namely Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Swaziland, Uganda, and Zambia, who were leading teachers, trainers and curriculum developers in respective countries.

The training provided a valuable opportunity for the participants: up-to-date and applicable teaching technique and try-out to Malaysian primary students in English. Meantime, a JICA senior volunteer was attached to RECSAM as Specialist for Science Education for two years, shared his expertise on non-ICT instructional materials for science teaching, which also attracted a great of interest from the participants.

It is expected that their learned knowledge and technique can be shared with their African colleagues after their return to home countries.
