PUTRAJAYA, Feb 24 (Bernama) -- His Excellency Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob presented his letter of credentials as the Permanent Representative of Malaysia to the United Nations (UN) to His Excellency Mr. Antonio Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) on 22 February 2017 at 12.00 pm at the UN Headquarters, New York.

After the presentation of credentials, both Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram and Mr. Guterres had a discussion on issues of mutual interest, including how to further enhance the cooperation between Malaysia and the UN. 

During the meeting, Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram congratulated Mr. Guterres on his appointment as the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 1 January 2017. He expressed Malaysia’s continued support to Mr. Guterres in his ongoing efforts to enhance the work of the UN, particularly towards the maintenance of international peace and security.

Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram, 56, a senior career diplomat has served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia since 1988. He received his letter of appointment from the Honourable Dato’ Sri Anifah Aman, Minister of Foreign Affairs on 25 January 2017.

Prior to his new appointment, Dato’ Muhammad Shahrul Ikram served as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Department of Bilateral Affairs from 2016-2017. He also held the post of the Director-General of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat from 2013 to 2016.

He has held several key positions at the Ministry, including as Malaysia's Ambassador to Austria from 2010 to 2013, Ambassador to Qatar from 2007 to 2010, Counsellor at the Embassy of Malaysia in Vienna, Austria from 2002 to 2005 and as the Second Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia in Washington D.C. from 1994-1998.
