  CODING@SCHOOLS 2017 LAUNCHED!

Friday 19/05/2017

KUCHING, May 19 (Bernama) -- YBhg Tan Sri Dr. Mohd Irwan Serigar bin Abdullah, Secretary General of Treasury, Ministry of Finance, today launched Coding@Schools 2017 program to directly reach 6,000 primary students across the country. The program was launched in conjunction with the launch of Borneo 744 at Blue Ocean Entrepreneurs Township (BOET), Kuching, Sarawak.

Coding@Schools is an introductory program for primary students to learn the basics and fundamental principle of coding in a practical way. It is an initiative that was announced in the Budget 2016 by the Prime Minister under the area of Accelerating Innovation and Entrepreneurship and is an initiative of the National Malaysian Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS).

Participants of the program will learn the basics of web programming such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript that allows them to develop skills in creating and writing the code for the software application. This program in turn can help build participants' skills such as problem solving, creativity, collaboration and computational thinking which are 21st century skills.

The target group is students in standards 4, 5 and 6, aged between 10-12 years. The program is being implemented as part of extra-curricular activities in the selected primary schools throughout the country.

The pilot program in 2016 had reached 3,000 primary school students from 100 schools nationwide. This year, Coding@Schools will be focusing more on the rural schools while expanding its content to three categories: Immersion Camp, Alumni Bootcamp and Hackathons. The total reach for 2017 is 6,000 students.

The Immersion Camp will go to selected 120 primary schools with total reach of 3,600 participants. Each camp will run for 4 days in the school computer lab. Students will learn to create basic website using HTML, CSS and JavaScript and learn to build an app using LiveCode.

Alumni Bootcamp will be held at 30 schools with total participants of 900. It is called Alumni because the schools are from last year participants. The chosen schools will have 3 days coding camp in their school lab where students will learn HTML5, CSS3 and jQuery Mobile to create website apps.

For schools which were not selected for the 2016 and 2017 program, they will have the opportunity to participate in the Hackathon. Six Hackathons will be held to reach 1,500 students. Each hackathon will have 250 participants where they will learn to build an app using LiveCode for 2 days. 2

The culmination of Coding@Schools is National Code Challenge where selected best teams from each category (Immersion, Alumni and Hackathon) will compete for final prizes.

The program is designed and coordinated by the National Strategy Unit, Ministry of Finance, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the State Education Department. The program is implemented by StartupMalaysia.org.
