PUTRAJAYA, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Anifah Haji Aman led Malaysia’s delegation to the Trilateral Meeting on Security among the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia held in Manila, the Philippines on 22 June 2017. The Meeting was also attended by the Chiefs of the Armed Forces and Police as well as Heads of the Security and Intelligence agencies of the three countries.  
 
The Meeting was convened to discuss the common threats of terrorism and violent extremism in the region as well as joint efforts to be undertaken in addressing emerging challenges and threats that could undermine the stability of the three countries, and the region.
 
At the Meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed Malaysia’s concern over the security situation in the region and conveyed Malaysia’s commitment to take all necessary measures, and to work in concert with Indonesia and the Philippines to address the issues.
 
He also expressed that the next crucial step would be for the three countries to take immediate actions, including engaging each other in information and intelligent sharing, as well as exploring new effective and innovative measures. The Minister of Foreign Affairs underlined the importance of addressing the root causes and underlying conditions of terrorism and violent extremism.
 
The Meeting agreed that success in effectively addressing transnational threats can only be achieved through proper development of strategies, and cooperation in security and intelligence on a regional scale. In this connection, the Ministers tasked their senior officials to deliberate on various measures that have been identified and to report the outcome of their deliberations to the Ministers.
 
The Meeting also agreed to formalize the cooperation through the establishment of a mechanism which would be further discussed by the senior officials. A Joint Statement was issued at the end of the Trilateral Meeting.
 
YB Dato’ Sri Anifah Haji Aman also had the opportunity to have a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Ibu Retno Marsudi, at the side-lines of the Trilateral Meeting.
