ALOR SETAR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS Chemicals Group Berhad (PCG), on 15 August, was awarded the Anugerah Sumbangsih 2016 by Kedah State Education Department, for its unwavering commitment to help improve the academic performance of schoolchildren in the state.
 
The award was presented in a ceremony held at Dewan Sri Negeri, Wisma Darul Aman, in conjunction with Kedah State Teacher’s Day Celebration 2017. The event was graced by Raja Muda of Kedah, Dato’ Seri DiRaja Tan Sri Tunku Sallehuddin ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah and Raja Puan Muda of Kedah, Tengku Maliha Tengku Ariff.
 
Present to receive the award was Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah Sdn Bhd, Haji Sarun Selamat.
 
Commenting on the award, PCG Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Datuk Sazali Hamzah said, “We are honoured to accept the Anugerah Sumbangsih. This is the fourth time we’ve been accorded with this honour.
 
“This award recognises our efforts in contributing sustainably to the wellbeing of the society through various educational initiatives,” added Datuk Sazali. “It will also further strengthen our resolve to raise the bar in establishing many more far-reaching sustainability projects for the community in Kedah.”
 
He added that as a responsible company, PCG always strives to balance business and societal value creation towards generating sustainable growth.
 
Started in 2003, the educational initiatives were carried out by PETRONAS Chemicals Fertiliser Kedah Sdn Bhd in Gurun. The efforts were first recognised by the Kedah State Government and State Education Department in 2010 and subsequently in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
 
Among others, the educational-based initiatives comprise Seminar Motivasi Perdana, Majlis Penyerahan Sumbangan Persekolahan, Seminar Kecemerlangan UPSR, PMR & SPM; Program Bakti Pendidikan PETRONAS (which is now known as Program Sentuhan Ilmu PETRONAS), Back-to-School Programe, Sahabat Pendidikan Pencegahan Dadah, PETRONAS Education & Career Talk, Toxic and Emergency Drills as well as donations in kind for educational activities throughout Kedah.
 
Speaking at the event, Haji Sarun said, “The people of Kedah form an integral part of our business. We take pride in being able to share some of our success with the communities that live in the vicinity of our operations.
 
“Over the years, we have developed some meaningful programmes that strive to empower the communities where we operate. We see this as an opportunity to improve their lives and create meaningful change in local communities,” he added.
 
Since being listed in 2010, PCG, the petrochemical entity of the Malaysian national oil and gas company PETRONAS has invested heavily in the effort to support education in the areas where it operates.
