MARIC AND UK DELEGATES LAYING THE TRACK FOR A ROSY MALAYSIAN RAIL FUTURE

Friday 15/09/2017

CYBERJAYA, Sept 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Rail Industry Corporation (MARIC), a newly-established association that represents the collective business interests of the local rail companies, received a big delegation of rail consultants and players from the United Kingdom headed by the British High Commission Kuala Lumpur. The group of UK consultants are currently involved in the Transit Oriental Development (TOD) efforts.

This visit is timely as Malaysia aims to create a seamless transportation system, connecting districts, towns and cities in the most sustainable way. Urban development and “smart cities” is closely aligned with the advancement of rail network system as new stations transform into new townships that will catalyse new industries and spur urbanisation. Rail network has the potential to create a development super-corridor of urban cities from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore with the construction of a high-speed rail infrastructure. This is expected to immediately boost the combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to the top ranking in Asia.

The networking session hosted by the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT) was MARIC’s continuing initiative to promote their members and explore collaboration with others. The President of MARIC, who is also the President and Chief Executive Office of MIGHT, Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman highlighted the importance of promoting MARIC as the platform for the national rail industry players working with experienced international rail consultants and companies. “This meeting will provide members with the opportunity to network with international industry players and to forge sustainable partnership in pursuing projects locally and abroad”. He also expressed the appreciation of MARIC members to the UK representatives for their willingness to share their knowledge and expertise in planning, developing, construction and maintenance of the modern and efficient rail network in the United Kingdom. The highlight of the networking session was the presentation by MARIC on the business opportunities in the Malaysia rail industry and the capabilities of MARIC members. This was followed by an informal business matching session for exchanging contacts, sharing of experience and knowledge amongst the participants.

MARIC membership consist of locally-registered companies involved in rolling stocks, signalling, communications, power & electrification, track works, automated fare collection, maintenance, repair & overhaul (MRO) and consultancy. The association aims to be the platform to address challenges and develop strategies for the industry. At the same time, it unifies the small and medium industry players to create better visibility and share common marketing and training activities. MARIC act as the referral point for relevant Government ministries and agencies in support of development in policy, human capital, technology transfer and supply chain for the betterment of our rail industry.
