TALKING POINTS YB MITI MINISTER : MIDA OPEN DAY 2017

Tuesday 19/09/2017

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 19 (Bernama) --

MIDA CONTRIBUTIONS

A lot of MIDA’s efforts and contributions go unnoticed by the general public, and there is a common misperception that MIDA is only for MNCs or foreign companies.

In reality, MIDA since day one has always been focused on ensuring the long term growth of Malaysia. Since its operations in1967, MIDA has been at the centre of industrial development in the country. The vast number of industrial establishments humming along efficiently throughout the country are testimony of MIDA’s success.

From 1980 until June 2017, MIDA has approved a total of 29,209 manufacturing projects with investments of RM1.08 trillion. Of this, foreign investment amounted to RM585.5 billion or 54% while domestic investment valued at RM498.0 billion or 46%. These projects have created over 3.2 million job opportunities.

The indirect result of these projects, from both big and small, foreign and local companies, have generated far more jobs and business opportunities in the industrial and manufacturing sector. This includes spin-off to other sectors such as hotel & tourism, real estate, logistics, retail, healthcare, education and banking & insurance.

Due to MIDA’s contribution to the growth of the manufacturing sector, the composition of exports for manufactured goods and its contribution to GDP have also increased in importance.

Today, manufactured goods accounted for more than 80% of total exports. In fact, these exports expanded by 19.1% to RM368.12 billion in the first half of 2017.

In terms of GDP, the manufacturing sector is the second largest contributor to Malaysia’s GDP at 22.8% in the first quarter of 2017.

The strong presence of FDI brought about by MIDA since early days of the country’s industrialisation has helped to upgrade and diversify the range of products and services and promoted the growth of local supply chain ecosystems and related services industry.

Today, over 5,000 companies from more than 40 countries have made Malaysia their location for manufacturing and related services operations. Among them are B.Braun, Osram Opto Semiconductor, Infineon, Abbott, Boston Scientific, HP, Biocon, Keysight Technologies, Rohm-Wako, Longi, Kaneka, Eastman Chemical, Honeywell, Infineon, Panasonic, Samsung, GE, Jinko Solar Technology, Hanwha Q CELLS and CI International.

Through outsourcing in the manufacturing sector, for example, FDI has been driving technological change by nurturing Malaysian companies to jointly design and develop new products.

Through the growth of FDI, Malaysia’s domestic companies including the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have flourished and are important components to the global supply chain. Some of them have even gone on to be publicly listed on Bursa Malaysia. The names include Top Glove, CCM Duopharma Biotech, Pentamaster Corporation, Press Metal Aluminum Holdings, ViTrox Corporation, JCY International, Globetronics Technology and Inari Amertron.

MIDA has undertaken several initiatives to facilitate domestic investments and advocate the development of supply chains between Malaysian companies with MNCs and large corporations in the country.

I trust that many companies have benefitted from them and I hope to see more SMEs leveraging on these platforms to bring their business to greater heights.

MIDA TALENT DATABASE

Announcement on MIDA’s Talent Database

MIDA is developing a database of job seekers via the online submission of resume on the MIDA website.

Given the close contact MIDA has with companies, the agency is able to stay updated with the direction the industries are moving and can identify the type of talents required.

Using the database, MIDA will ramp up efforts in meeting the talent needs of companies and match job seekers with potential employers. I would like encourage more job seekers to seize this opportunity to register their interest with MIDA via the virtual platform on their website.
