BANK PEMBANGUNAN MALAYSIA BERHAD LAUNCHES WORKPLACE OF THE FUTURE INITIATIVE

Tuesday 16/01/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) launched its “Workplace of the Future” initiative yesterday in support of the 2050 National Transformation or TN50 programme helmed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The initiative was officially launched by Youth and Sports Minister YB Khairy Jamaluddin.

The TN50 programme was an initiative carried out by the Ministry of Youth and Sports to start a national conversation as we approached the close of the 2020 developmental era. The extensive bottom-up engagement is the first effort of its kind, collecting the aspirations, views and ideas of Malaysia’s youth to find out what they would like the country to be by 2050.

Through the initiative, BPMB is committed towards providing an ideal workplace which caters to an upcoming generation of young Malaysian talents, to meet their aspirations in terms of hard infrastructure, working conditions and job satisfaction.

“The image of a banking institution is that of an inflexible workplaces - one of the last places to embrace change. Not necessarily the first port of call for millennials that are looking to be inspired, to inspire and be the agent of change,” said BPMB President/Group Chief Executive Officer Encik Shaharuddin Zainuddin. “Our greatest asset is not our balance sheet, or our capital or our building – but it’s our people. Hence we need to have an environment where the staff are motivated, inspired, ambitious, and happy to work here.”

“The Ministry has engaged with Malaysian youth from all over the country through various channels including on-ground dialogues, and listened to their voices and aspirations. We have engaged with more than 1.7 million youths and gathered over 60,000 unique aspirations,” said YB Khairy Jamaluddin at the event. The minister also shared some of the aspirations given by the youth including flexible working hours, the choice of working from home, better support systems for working moms, gender equality; as well as a greener and more sustainable wokplace.

Five youths from BPMB were given the opportunity to engage in a session with the Minister to voice out their aspirations for 2050. BPMB also introduced its TN50 Brand Ambassador, Encik Mahadzir Derani, who received a Sports Excellence Award for representing Malaysia in Chess at the 9th ASEAN Para Games. He received a bronze medal for his effort during the Games.

The event was also attended by BPMB Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz bin Wan Abdullah, BPMB board members, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Finance and Bank Negara Malaysia.

About Bank Pembangunan

Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) was incorporated on 28 November 1973 and began operation on 8 June, 1974. BPMB landed its first significant role in the development of Malaysian economy by assisting entrepreneurs involved in small and medium-sized industries through the provision of various financing facilities, training and advisory services, particularly to the Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

BPMB achieved another milestone in December 1998 by providing financing to infrastructure projects, particularly Government-backed projects. In early 2002, BPMB further enhanced its role as a development finance institution by offering corporate advisory and underwriting services to companies that were involved in the development of infrastructure projects.

Today, BPMB is mandated to provide medium to long term financing to the infrastructure, maritime, technology and oil & gas sectors. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary Pembangunan Leasing Corporation Sdn. Bhd. (PLC), BPMB also provides financing to small and medium-sized businesses including those involved in manufacturing, construction, supply, transportation, agriculture, hospitality and information technology. BPMB’s venture capital arm, Global Maritime Venture Berhad (GMVB) is the country’s principal equity venture capital provider in the maritime industry mandated to play a strategic role in the development of the national maritime business sector.

With a combined asset value of about RM26.6 billion, the BPMB Group is well positioned to meet the financing and business development needs of Malaysian businesses in the priority sectors.
