KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 9 (Bernama) -- Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong held a bilateral discussion with H.E. Sigrid Kaag, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherland on 9th February 2018 in Kuala Lumpur.
During this meeting, YB Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong discussed issues related to the development and cooperation between both countries for the oil palm industry.
On the European Union (EU) Parliament resolution banning palm-based biofuels, Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong described the position of the Netherlands Government against unjust discrimination as mature and rational.
The public stance from representatives of the Netherlands Government at this moment is important, as the Netherlands represents the biggest export destination for Malaysian palm oil among the 28 EU member countries.
Palm oil and palm-based exports to EU countries have a total value of RM11 billion in 2017. From this total, exports to the Netherlands totaled RM6.3 billion.
Thus, the continued bilateral discussions and discourses between Malaysia and the Netherlands needs to be intensified to ensure that only accurate facts of the oil palm industry are propagated effectively.
Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong reiterated Malaysia's commitment against the unjustified trade ban towards palm oil, to safeguard the livelihoods of 650,000 Malaysian oil palm smallholders. Malaysia will not tolerate the actions of related parties that sabotage the incomes of the smallholders.
Apart from that, both ministers also agreed to strengthen their cooperation in their common interests through Malaysia-Netherland Sub-Committee on Oil Palm (SCOP).
Datuk Seri Mah Siew Keong and H.E. Sigrid Kaag also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Malaysia Palm Oil Board (MPOB) and the Netherlands' Wageningen Food and Biobased Research, on the Optimisation of Sustainable Use of Oil Palm Biomass.
This cooperation serves to develop downstream search programs targeted on value-added products, such as packaging and bioplastics from oil palm trunks.
