~ Sunway City takes next step towards low-carbon digital economy ~
 
BANDAR SUNWAY, May 22 (Bernama) -- Sunway Group has officially launched Sunway WiFi across its 800-acre township of Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, providing free internet for its population of 200,000 including 40,000 students and 42 million footfalls garnered within the city every year.
 
The free WiFi service is available in all public areas including Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway Lagoon, the three Sunway hotels, the Sunway educational institutions, and throughout the ‘Canopy Walk’ – a 4-km elevated walkway connecting all the aforementioned establishments throughout the city.
 
“The free WiFi service will create wide access to the internet, another step for us in making Sunway City the first private-driven Smart Sustainable City in the nation. Sunway City will be the first city to launch this, with Sunway City Ipoh and Sunway Iskandar in Johor in the pipeline. Soon, communities will have access to free WiFi in all our townships across Malaysia,” said Cheng Jew Keng, Head of Sunway Smart Sustainable City taskforce.
 
“The township-wide access supports the nation’s push towards embracing a digital economy,” he added.
 
The free Sunway WiFi service has also been implemented in its integrated developments of Sunway Velocity and Sunway Putra.
 
Last year, Sunway Group, in a unique not-for-profit smart partnership with Sunway Ventures and Sunway University, launched its own innovation labs – Sunway iLabs -  an accelerator, incubator and co-working space which has been certified as a Malaysia Digital Hub.
 
This was followed by Sunway University’s achievement of Premier Digital Tech University status, recognising its provision of a complete, sustainable and well-supported ecosystem, where students can gain optimum exposure to the latest industry technologies guided by faculty members and industry players.
 
Fully committed to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Sunway Group has undertaken a host of initiatives to support Malaysia’s push towards a low-carbon digital economy. The digitalisation of services follows Sunway City’s extensive efforts to push the city towards being the first low-carbon township in Malaysia.
 
“ As part of the smart city initiative, Sunway City is also exploring the feasibility of how  we can leverage the internet of things to collect details about our assets using connected sensors so that we can measure and make improvements that can reduce our environmental impact as well as increase the efficiency of our services. For example, in The Pinnacle, connected devices are helping us reduce our energy usage alongside environmental design resulting in the building operating on 25% less water and 32% less energy than non-green buildings. We are currently looking at how connected devices and sensors can help us reduce even more energy consumption through integrated energy management systems,” Cheng added.
