THE SALVATION ARMY CELEBRATES 80 YEARS OF SERVING THE NEEDY IN MALAYSIA

Monday 06/08/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- The Salvation Army will be celebrating its 80th year of service to marginalised communities in Malaysia. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the non-profit organisation will be hosting a charity dinner themed ‘Amazing Grace’ on Saturday, 18 August at Le Quadri Hotel Kuala Lumpur.

The charity dinner aims to raise funds for its social service centres and programmes that consists of six residential homes for children, a home for the elderly, a special needs centre and nine community service centres nationwide. These centres benefit over 3,000 people from diverse backgrounds across Malaysia.

Recently, The Salvation Army piloted a new community empowerment programme to assist some of their clients set up small businesses. The goal of this initiative is to help struggling families facing financial difficulties and unemployment find alternative sources of income. Mentorship is provided as part of the programme to help ensure clients succeed.

Territorial Commander of The Salvation Army Singapore, Malaysia and Myanmar Territory, Colonel Rodney Walters said, “The number of Malaysians needing assistance has been increasing due to the rising cost of living in the country. Many have lost their jobs while others simply do not have enough to put food on the table. I am thankful that The Salvation Army has been meeting needs in Malaysia for 80 years and we will continue to improve our social service programmes to bridge the gaps in our community.”

With the support of Talam Transform Berhad, The Salvation Army’s 80th Anniversary Charity Dinner hopes to raise RM 500,000 that will go towards its Social Fund to continue funding its social service programmes throughout Malaysia. The event line-up will include performances by the children under the care of The Salvation Army, testimonies by past beneficiaries and a performance by Talam Transform Berhad. The public is invited to contribute towards the event by either purchasing a table or seats or donating online.
