  PETRONAS LAUNCHES WATER FOR LIFE PROJECT IN JUBA

JUBA, South Sudan, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS through its subsidiary, PETRONAS Carigali Nile Limited, recently launched the first phase of its Water for Life project in Block 4 Gudele West, Juba. The project is in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum Republic of South Sudan and Nile Hope, a South Sudan national NGO. It is aimed to provide sufficient and accessible amount of quality and safe water to the local community, which will benefit more than 40,000 residents around Juba. 

The initiative is part of PETRONAS' corporate social responsibility commitment which emphasises community well-being and development through increasing awareness on health, sanitation and safety, improving the quality of healthcare as well as providing access to clean water.

Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib said in his speech: “As a responsible corporate citizen, we are looking forward to co-developing sustainable community-based programmes for the people of South Sudan with the Ministry of Petroleum and partners.”

“This project is the first of our Water for Life projects in South Sudan. We will be extending the same project to four other locations in the Juba area. When all the projects are up and running, we hope that it will provide enough clean water to approximately 40,000 people,” he added.

The event, held on 11 September 2018, was launched by Minister of Petroleum, the Honourable Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth and accompanied by PETRONAS Executive Vice President & Chief Executive Officer, Upstream, Datuk Mohd Anuar Taib.

Other programmes being carried out by PETRONAS in South Sudan include PETRONAS Education Sponsorship Programme (PESP), Public Surgical Campaign, school refurbishment and upgrading as well as community development programme through its Joint Operating Companies (JOCs).

In addition, on 10 September 2018, PETRONAS and its partners also marked a key milestone in South Sudan, when PETRONAS Carigali Nile Ltd signed an exploration, production and sharing agreement (EPSA) and Transitional Agreement extension for Blocks 1, 2 and 4 with the government of South Sudan.

PETRONAS in South Sudan is represented by PETRONAS Carigali Nile Limited (PCNL) which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PETRONAS. Established in 2011 and having its headquarters in Juba, PCNL is entrusted to manage PETRONAS’ Exploration & Production business and oversees the entire operations in exploration, development and production of crude oil in South Sudan.

PETRONAS’ participation in South Sudan’s petroleum industry is through its equity in three Joint Operating Companies (JOCs) namely DPOC (Block 3/7), GPOC (1/2/4) and SPOC (Block 5A).
