  PALM OIL AND RUBBER ECONOMIC AND INVESTMENT MISSION TO NORTH AFRICA AND COLOMBIA 21-29 SEPTEMBER 2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- YB Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, Deputy Minister of Primary Industries will be leading a Palm Oil and Rubber Economic and Investment Mission to Egypt, Morocco and Colombia from 21 to 29 September 2018. YB Deputy Minister will be leading a delegation comprising representatives from the Ministry of Primary Industries, Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), LGM Properties Corporation (LGMPC), Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC).
 
The objective of the mission is to strengthen trade and address issues related to trade as well as explore market and investment opportunities particularly in palm oil and rubber. Egypt is an important gateway for Malaysia's palm oil to countries in North Africa while Morocco is one of the potential and growing markets for Malaysian palm oil imports. In 2017, exports of palm oil products to Egypt amounted to RM919.3 million while Morocco amounted to RM72.3 million or 1.2% and 0.09% of the total palm oil exports and palm oil-based products respectively. In addition, these countries are among the potential new markets for exports of natural rubber and rubber products, especially rubber gloves. Currently, Malaysian exports of rubber and rubber products to Egypt in 2017 was RM127.8 million, Colombia at RM82.4 million and Morocco at RM29.6 million or 0.4%, 0.3% and 0.1% of total Malaysia rubber exports, respectively.
                       
During the Mission, YB Deputy Minister is scheduled to convene bilateral discussion with H.E Dr. Ali Al Moselhey, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Egypt; H.E Mr. Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, Morocco. YB Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin is also expected to have a networking dinner and dialogue with the palm oil and rubber importers in Egypt and Morocco. The objective of this dialogue is to strengthen networking with the major importers of palm oil and rubber to Egpyt and Morocco as well as increase promotional efforts on palm nutrition and rubber gloves. YB Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin is also expected to visit ARMA Factory which is one of the leading fast moving consumer goods companies in Egypt. This visit is to provide an overview and background of the vegetable oil sector in Egypt.
 
The Deputy Minister will attend the 19th International Oil Palm Conference in Cartegena, Colombia as the guest of honor from 26 to 28 September 2018. The conference is organised by The Colombian National Federation of Oil Palm Growers - FEDEPALMA and CENIPALMA Research Center. This conference is a forum for establishing networking and strengthening collaborations in palm-related research and development. YB Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin will also hold a courtesy call with H.E Aurelio Iragorri Valencia, Minister of Agriculture, Colombia. Colombia is the largest producer of palm oil in Latin America and the fourth in the world. In 2017, Colombia's palm oil production was 1.62 million tonnes, which is 2.4% of the world's total production. The courtesy call will discuss on Colombia accession to Council of Palm Oil Producing Countries as well as effort for palm oil producing countries to counter the anti-palm oil particularly in Europe.

The Palm Oil and Rubber Economic and Investment Mission to Egypt, Morocco and Colombia is part of the Ministry's ongoing activities to promote palm oil based products and rubber-based products to key markets especially countries in North Africa and Latin America.
