CREST - LEADING DIGITAL HEALTHCARE REVOLUTION IN MALAYSIA

Thursday 04/10/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Collaborative Research in Engineering, Science and Technology (CREST) and the Ministry of Health (MOH) was inked today, signifying a historic milestone in revolutionising digital healthcare in Malaysia.

The MoU will see the two parties collaborate in Research & Development & Commercialisation (R&D&C) in the field of digital healthcare which focusses on the digital innovation in healthcare delivery and solutions, joint cluster development activities, industry network engagement, manufacturing alliance, talent development and digital health innovation hubs.

Representing CREST, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Jaffri Ibrahim while MOH was represented by the Director General of Health, Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. The signing was witnessed by the Minister of Health, Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad and CEO of Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), Dato’ Azman Mahmud, as the representative of the Minister of International Trade and Industry.

Digital Healthcare Cluster was formed by CREST to focus on the application of wearable embedded systems, Internet of Things (IoT) and connected devices technology; and the successful commercialisation of healthcare products, solutions and services by the Electrical & Electronics (E&E) industry.

Led by the industry, supported by academia and government, flexible wearable embedded systems and connected devices utilising artificial intelligence and data analytics are poised to advance Malaysia healthcare industry into the next plateau of benchmark locally, while opening up new opportunities globally.

Mr Jaffri said, “Buoyed by demands and aspirations of the E&E industry in healthcare, we strongly believe that digital healthcare innovations are at the heart of addressing the healthcare challenges faced by our country today. CREST, collaborating with Telemedicine Development Group (TDG), is best placed to provide the necessary ecosystem for these innovations. We are thrilled to collaborate with MOH in realising cost effective, quality healthcare solutions and services using IoT.”

Dr Dzulkefly heralded that CREST has created a vibrant R&D&C ecosystem in digital healthcare. Together with TDG, both parties could support and complement the National Healthcare Transformation to provide equitable, affordable and accessible high quality health services to the rakyat.

TDG was established in 2016 to nurture collaborative and innovative digital healthcare services ecosystem for Malaysia. The group is co-chaired by the Director General of Health and Chairman of Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). TDG plays an active role in regulation/policy, knowledge dissemination, clinical trials & go-to-market for digital healthcare in Malaysia.

During the event, invited guests were given the opportunity to witness first hand, the Iodate Micro-Method Reagent (SIMR) kit and the IodateCalc© app, a project that was developed by the researchers at the Institute for Medical Research (IMR), MOH.

“These two products are to be used hand-in-hand in quantifying the iodine in salt outside the laboratory in the enactment of the Universal Salt Iodization (USI) programme. The products have achieved two Silver Awards at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Expo (ITEX) 2017 and one Bronze Award at the Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2018. Both innovations have been patented, copyrighted and are embarking the commercialization process with CREST with the signing of the MoU and the Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) today,” added Dr Noor Hisham.

"With the signing of MoU between the MOH and CREST, I trust that various IoT solutions will be developed and enhanced for better diagnosis and significant savings in healthcare costs.  As the principal investment promotion agency, MIDA continues to support CREST in championing the research, design and commercialisation of digital healthcare-related innovations in Malaysia. Strong collaborations between stakeholders from multiple expertise and backgrounds are essential towards ensuring that Malaysia is able to propel its global industry leaders towards this new revolution," said Dato’ Azman, who is also the Chairman of CREST.

“The first digital health innovation hub certainly augurs well for our country which is undergoing a renaissance after the tremendous results of GE14. The innovation hub will bring together medical fraternities, industry collaborators and academic researchers in ideating, researching and innovating digital healthcare solutions for the benefit of the Rakyat. We at CREST alongside MOH are proud to be the pioneer of the digital healthcare revolution in our country,” added Mr Jaffri.

CREST is the quasi-government body that has been tasked with catalysing the E&E ecosystem for advanced research and engineering in Malaysia.  Launched 6 years ago in 2012, CREST was formed to address Malaysia’s E&E needs and plays a significant role to create and grow Malaysian R&D&C ecosystem in the E&E economic sector. Since 2015, CREST realised the needs for E&E sector to enable growth and disrupt other emerging sectors, including healthcare, using local markets as the test bed to validate the innovation yet with the global market in mind.
