MINISTER YB YEO BEE YIN ANNOUNCES REVOCATION OF NON-PERFORMING FEED-IN TARIFF PROJECTS AND NEW QUOTA RELEASE BY SEDA IN Q4 2018

Wednesday 17/10/2018

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 (Bernama) -- Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia has revoked non-performing Feed-in Tariff (FiT) projects in total of 155.7256 MW last month and will release a total quota of 114.5682 MW for eligible applicants to apply. The small hydro category will have a quota of 74.5682 MW for applications expected to achieve commercial operations by 2020 and 2021. The quota allocated for biogas is 30 MW whereas for biomass is 10 MW; these quota are for applications achieving commercial operations by 2021.

This announcement was made by YB Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change at the opening of the International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition (IGEM) 2018 this morning. According to Minister YB Yeo, SEDA will also conduct the inaugural exercise of e-bidding for their biogas quota. The aim of the e-bidding process is to create a better pricing efficiency for electricity generated from the biogas resources through healthy competition.

SEDA Malaysia will first conduct its gamma testing of the e-bidding system together with the biogas industry on 25th October 2018 and the actual e-bidding will commence on 19th November 2018. Interested applicants can submit their applications through the e-FiT online system (efit.seda.gov.my) during Q4 of 2018. SEDA will announce the dates of applications one month before the opening period to ensure fairness in the process.

About SEDA Malaysia

Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia is a statutory body reporting to the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change (MESTECC). SEDA was established in September 2011 under the SEDA Act 2011 [Act 726] with the key purpose of driving the renewable energy and energy efficiency agenda in the country.

What is Feed-in Tariff (FiT)

The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism is an initiative implemented by SEDA Malaysia to empower Malaysians to be renewable energy (RE) producers. Malaysia's Feed-in Tariff (FiT) system obliges Distribution Licensees (DLs) to buy from Feed-in Approval Holders (FIAHs) the electricity produced from renewable resources (renewable energy) and sets the FiT rate. The DLs will pay for renewable energy supplied to the electricity grid for a specific duration.
