LANGKAWI, March 29 (Bernama) -- Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) together with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) have entered into a collaboration to enhance the safety and security of Malaysia’s offshore oil and gas facilities.
In formalising the collaboration, PETRONAS was represented by Abdul Jalil Zainul, Head of Strategic Relations & Advisory, Governance & Strategic Relations of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), while MMEA was represented by its Deputy Director-General (Operations), Vice-Admiral Datuk Mohd Zubil Mat Som, at LIMA 2019 recently.
Abdul Jalil said the collaboration aims to elevate the safety and security of PETRONAS’ facilities in Malaysian waters to avoid incidents including maritime accidents, encroachment and fish bombings as well as potential crises and disasters within the oil and gas operation areas.
“There are close to 300 offshore oil and gas facilities in the South China Sea, with numerous safety and security challenges and most of these threats were found to occur within the safety zone and restricted areas surrounding the offshore upstream installations,” he added.
Additionally, both parties will also look at ways to improve the Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in the event of an emergency within the parameters of the facilities.
An outreach programme for the communities and fishermen residing along the Malaysian coastal areas has also been established, to create awareness on the dangers of fishing at the restricted areas surrounding the offshore oil and gas facilities.
The collaboration will also be supported by other government agencies such as the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM), the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) and the Marine Department of Malaysia (MDM).
