HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 3RD AIAC-ICC PRE-MOOT FOR THE WILLEM C. VIS INTERNATIONAL COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION MOOT

Monday 01/04/2019

KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) -- The Asian International Arbitration Centre (“AIAC”) proudly announces the successful closing of the 3rd AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot (“Pre-Moot”). The Pre-Moot was jointly organised by the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce (“ICC”) and the AIAC from 22nd to 24th of March 2019. The purpose of the Pre-Moot, which is aligned with the AIAC’s purpose, is to foster Alternative Dispute Resolution capacity building in the region. As a curtain-raiser for the Pre-Moot, the ICC Young Arbitrators’ Forum (“YAF”) and AIAC Young Practitioners’ Group (“YPG”) also held a conference on 21st March where experienced practitioners and academics dissected the anatomy of international arbitration, starting from procedure, substance and enforcement. As a prelude to the Pre-Moot, the speakers also shared their views on several issues arising from this year’s Vis Moot Problem.

The AIAC hosted 90 teams with close to 380 participants from 21 countries and 180 hearings with over 200 arbitrators, making it the largest Vis Pre-Moot internationally leading up to the competitions in Hong Kong and Vienna.

On Friday and Saturday, participants competed in the general rounds of the Pre-Moot followed by the elimination rounds featuring the top 32 teams on Saturday afternoon. The final day of the Pre-Moot held the Semi-Finals, the Malaysian Final, and the International Final just before the Awards Ceremony and Cultural Gala Dinner which celebrated diversity of students, arbitrators and coaches, as well as featured traditional Malay dances.

The Organising Committee of the 3rd AIAC-ICC Pre-Moot congratulates the following winners:

ChampionNational Law Institute University, Bhopal
Runner-UpNational Academy of Legal Studies and Research, University of Law
3rd PlaceNational Law School of India University Team 1

The Organising Committee would also like to congratulate and thank all the participants, coaches, arbitrators, sponsors, supporting organisations and volunteers of this year’s Pre-Moot.

As Mr. Vinayak Pradhan, the Director (Acting) of the AIAC, emphasized during his Opening Remarks, “the AIAC is determined to carry the spirit of inclusivity of the Vis Moot. What makes this Pre-Moot unique is that we welcome non-participating teams at Vienna and Hong Kong to come and experience the Vis Moot through us. Through this initiative, we are able to bring together an outstanding group of law students from Asia who struggle to obtain the resources to get to Vienna or Hong Kong. It is for these reasons that this Pre-Moot is vital to our mission to create a sustainable framework and resource base for international arbitration not only in Malaysia but all over the Asia-Pacific region.”
