MEDIA STATEMENT BY YB TERESA KOK, MINISTER OF PRIMARY INDUSTRIES, ON THE SIGNING OF THE SUPPLEMENTARY AGREEMENT TO RESUME THE EAST COAST RAIL LINK PROJECT
Friday 12/04/2019
“MPI hopes for more local content in rail project, and for China to buy more palm oil with deal inked”
PUTRAJAYA, April 12 (Bernama) -- I welcome the good news of the Supplementary Agreement signed between Malaysia Rail Link Sdn Bhd and China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) that will pave the way for the resumption of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project. I also hope the CCCC will prioritise local contents in the construction of the project. A lot of materials made from Malaysian rubber can be used in the construction of the rail track as well as for seismic bearing, while Malaysian timber is suitable as rail sleepers. The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) hopes that this new development will see China making more commitment to purchase our commodities, especially palm oil and rubber. China has always been an important trade partner for Malaysia. It is also our third largest export market for palm oil. We wish our bilateral ties to be further strengthened with the inking of the deal. I congratulate the Government for being able to reduce the construction cost, thus ensuring the project does not over burden our country’s financial position. YB TERESA KOK APRIL 12, 2019 PUTRAJAYA
