Presented by live entertainment company Base Entertainment, the musical is based on the novel by French writer Gaston Leroux about a disfigured musical genius who lives in the sewers beneath the Paris Opera House, dubbed the Phantom, who falls fiercely in love with the young soprano Christine.
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart and is the longest-running show in Broadway history, which is now enjoying its 33rd year in London's West End. Winner of 70 major theatre awards, it continues to play to packed houses and enthrall audiences with its opulent stage sets, legendary music score and emotional storyline.
In light of this announcement, BASE Entertainment is proud to host the Tun Siti Hasmah Charity Gala, happening on July 3.
"I have always had a soft spot for the arts, so when Base Entertainment invited me to be the patron for
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, I was delighted to accept the offer.
"
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA is the world's most popular musical - a West End and Broadway classic - showcasing Andrew Lloyd Webber's most famous compositions. It has something for everyone - breathtaking special effects, beautiful costumes and a timeless romantic storyline.
"I hope Malaysians from all walks of life will take this opportunity to experience this unforgettable musical," said Dr Siti Hasmah.
In line with Dr Siti Hasmah's numerous charitable initiatives, BASE Live Entertainment hopes to continue its tradition of giving back through the Tun Siti Hasmah Charity Gala.
The Gala aims to raise funds for two non-profit organisations: The Dyslexia Association of Malaysia (PDM) and Malaysian Spinal Injuries Association (MASIA).
PDM was established to advance the education and general welfare of children and adults suffering from dyslexia. Its main focus is to promote awareness and educate the public on integration methods for those with this learning disability. MASIA prides itself on being a self-help group for people with spinal cord injuries as well as for their families. The halfway house currently serves as a rehabilitation centre to encourage those affected to live better quality lives.
Both PDM and MASIA offer emotional and practical support to those affected, and rely mostly on the generosity of supporters to further their cause. Although both organisations are doing their part for the betterment of society, they are still severely underfunded. As such, the proceeds from the Gala will be channelled to these organisations to help them in their efforts.
"Malaysians had the privilege of witnessing our beloved Tun Dr Siti Hasmah perform on the violin last year; she is an inspiration to many. We are honoured to have her as a patron of
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA for the Charity Gala debut in Malaysia. Nobody exemplifies passion for the performing arts like her.
"BASE Entertainment has always believed in giving back to the community, and we are pleased that
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERAcan drive impact in support of causes that do not normally get enough visibility and attention," said Datuk Jared Lim, Head of BASE Entertainment.
The prestigious Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur will be transformed into the Palais Garnier opera house of Paris come this June 15, accompanied by soaring music, spectacular costumes and mesmerising performances. The buzz of excitement surrounding
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA's debut in Malaysia is testimony to the grandeur and artistry of this production.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and give to a noble cause at the same time. Tickets to the Charity Gala are priced at RM1,500 (Premium), RM1,000 (Category A) and RM600 (Category B).
