MALAYSIA TO WELCOME WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS 2020

Tuesday 14/05/2019

The largest engineering event of its kind to be held in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will officially host the 46th ITA-AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC) 2020 next year as the prestigious event has been handed over in the recent WTC 2019, held in Naples, Italy.

WTC, which is owned by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association (ITA) seeks to explore latest innovations, trends and advances in all areas of tunneling sustainably. The highly-anticipated annual event brings together engineers, designers, construction professionals and best expertise in its field.

Locally organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM), WTC 2020 is also strongly supported by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), an agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia (MOTAC).

Datuk Zulkefli Hj. Sharif, Chief Executive Officer of MyCEB recaps the momentous occasion when the local team aced the bid in 2017. “The competition was stiff, but Team Malaysia was still able to convince ITA. This is attributed to the strong local organisation, IEM. The bid process called for very thorough proposals and mirroring the Malaysian hospitality, we included multi-lingual documents that instantly connected to both decision makers and members,” he revealed.

Datuk Zulkefli also proudly announced that the seven days event which is slated to take place between 15-21 May 2020, is expected to generate an economic impact close to RM 21 million from more than 1,500 delegates.

WTC2020’s Organising Chairman, Ir. Dr. Ooi Teik Aun explained that the tunneling and underground space development in Malaysia has been impressive. “We have progressed tremendously especially in the past decade. From our mega dam projects, road systems to transportation and more, Malaysia has carved an impression. I believe with the arrival of WTC 2020, we will undoubtedly increase a great deal when it comes to knowledge and innovation. For Malaysia as a destination, I am also confident that we will deliver the best to our delegates. They can look forward to an enjoyable trip,”

He continued “When bringing a specialised business event as such to the country, the assistance of our counterparts such as MyCEB is imperative in ensuring that all is smooth from the bidding process to post-event. The dynamism of the team working on this has opened a whole new spectrum for IEM in bidding and winning events for the country. Business events definitely play a vital role for the country’s economic roadmap”.

WTC 2020 will be themed “Innovation and Sustainable Underground Serving Global Connectivity”. The Congress focuses on multiple technical paper presentations, tunneling training courses, poster presentations, the ITA-AITES General Assembly, technical visits to ongoing tunneling projects in Malaysia, and interesting exhibitions by companies from all over the world presenting their latest tunneling solutions, innovations and technologies.

About MyCEB
MyCEB was established in 2009 by Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia to further strengthen Malaysia’s business tourism brand and position for the international business events market. A non-profit organisation, MyCEB serves as a central hub to assist meeting and event planners to bid for and stage international business events in Malaysia and act as a conduit for national product development. MyCEB’s goal is to improve its rankings as an international meetings destination within International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and to grow business tourism arrivals to Malaysia.

In December 2016, MyCEB mapped out the way forward for Malaysia in business events with the launch of ‘Malaysia’s Business Events Roadmap: Charting Malaysia’s Journey to 2020 and Beyond’. In helping to power Malaysia’s knowledge and creative economy, the business events roadmap will lay the groundwork, set up and manage the platforms for collaboration and support the development of strong local hosts.
