ARTICLE DEVOTED TO THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF THE KYRGYZ REPUBLIC: DEVELOPMENT OF KYRGYZ-MALAYSIAN RELATIONS

Thursday 18/07/2019

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The foreign policy of the Kyrgyz Republic since its independence was based on the provisions of the Constitution, the Declaration of State Independence, the norms of international law, adherence to the goals and principles of the UN.

Being an integral part of domestic policy, the foreign policy of Kyrgyzstan reflected the consolidated interests of the multinational and multi-religious people of the republic.

During this period, Kyrgyzstan actively developed diplomatic and other relations with most countries in the world. The realization of national interests of Kyrgyzstan was provided mainly by the development of friendly and mutually beneficial relations with neighbours, the major powers and integration associations of the world community.

So, in March 1992, since the signing of the Protocol on establishing diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and Malaysia begins the history of development of kyrgyz-malaysian cooperation. In 1995, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic made his official visit to Malaysia. In 1996 and 1997, the Malaysian Prime Minister twice visited Kyrgyzstan on an official visit.

Thanks to the support of the Malaysian side, the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan was opened in 1997 in Kuala Lumpur.

On May 28, 2008 the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Malaysia to the Kyrgyz Republic was appointed with residence in Tashkent.

In 2012, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's working visit took place to the Kyrgyz Republic, during which he held meetings with the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic.

In 2014, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic made a working visit to Malaysia. During the visit, bilateral meetings were held with the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia and the Mayor of Putrajaya.

The main concept of the visit was the need to intensify bilateral relations and the opening of a new chapter of the Kyrgyz-Malaysian cooperation.

At the same time, in 2014, an official visit of the Malaysian Foreign Minister to the Kyrgyz Republic took place, where the Malaysian delegation took part in the activities of the First World Nomad Games, including the opening ceremony of the games.

In 2018, the ex-President of the Kyrgyz Republic R. Otunbayeva made a working visit to Malaysia. A meeting was held with Malaysian Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, In the course of which prospects for the development of political and economic relations between Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia were discussed.

It is worth noting that Malaysia is a successful representative of the "Asian Tigers" and one of the most advanced countries in Southeast Asia, which has passed many key stages of political transit, including recent changes in the country after the general elections of May 9, 2018, and economic reforms. Kyrgyzstan is considering Malaysia as one of the most important and priority partners in the Asian region.

Kyrgyzstan is considering the possibility of strengthening bilateral relations with Malaysia in the field of economy, investment, education and tourism. There is an untapped potential in the economic and investment fields. Nevertheless, there are good results in the field of tourism and education. Tourist traffic from both countries is increasing every year, and Malaysia is popular among students from Kyrgyzstan. Currently, more than 170 students from Kyrgyzstan are studying in universities in Malaysia.

Thereby Kyrgyzstan and Malaysia have considerable potential for further development of a comprehensive and mutually beneficial cooperation in priority areas.
