MALAYSIA'S LARGEST FREE JAZZ FESTIVAL EXPECTED TO DRAW THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO ISKANDAR PUTERI WITH IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP OF WORLD-CLASS MUSICIANS

Friday 19/07/2019

ISKANDAR PUTERI, July 19 (Bernama) -- This year’s Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival 2019 is back again and promises two stages of experimental and classic jazz performances to invigorate the public along the Straits of Johor on 27 July 2019.

Presented by the township’s master developer UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”), the 3rd Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival is crafted with 9 jazz bands consisting of over 70 musicians from Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, United Kingdom and the United States that will entertain audiences by the harbour.

Inaugurated in 2017, Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival is rapidly growing into a regional draw for music enthusiasts due to its emphasis on musical excellence and diversity. Nevertheless, the free festival experience is more than just music, as festival-goers will also enjoy the marina breeze and beautiful harbour amidst the backdrop, with vendors offering a variety of freshly prepared food and beverages including unique clothing, art and accessories for sale. The festival has grown to become one of Johor’s most important cultural and community events, offering residents and visitors a chance to enjoy local and international performers.

Audiences will get the opportunity to catch renowned jazz guitarist like United Kingdom’s Alex Hutchings who performed with Michael Jackson on the Thriller Tour. In late 2017, he joined 4-time Grammy Award nominee Steven Wilson’s live band, touring with them in support of Wilson's To the Bone album.

Another musical powerhouse is Singaporean vocalist Alemay Fernandez, a veteran performer in the Asian jazz scene who has performed with legends such as Wynton Marsalis & The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, David Foster and Incognito.

Locally, we have established jazz musicians Noryzn Aziz and upcoming singer-songwriter Bil Musa who last year, signed up with Yuna Room Records.

UEM Sunrise has been organising Placemaking activities throughout the years since 2016 at Puteri Harbour and its surrounding areas to enhance the livability of this township.

With this impressive local and international line-up, the Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival 2019 can expect this year’s attendance to exceed 6,000 people.

Johor state Youth, Sports, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee chairman Sheikh Omar Ali said festivals like this, not only provides healthy entertainment for the youths, but also opens up avenues for alternative employment to them compared to conventional career choices.

“Events such as Iskandar Puteri Jazz Festival brings added value to Johor in terms of attracting visitors to the state from surrounding areas and afar as well as contributes to the eco-system and generates opportunities in events management for festival organisers,’’ he added.

Developing such events management skills, Sheikh Omar added, will contribute towards the preparation and organising of 2020’s Sukma games that will take place from 11-19 July in Johor to ensure it becomes the best ever.
