Staff of UEM Sunrise volunteered by sorting out thousands of donated books by the public for BukuHub, a community library in conjunction with Nelson Mandela International DayKUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Inspired by Nelson Mandela International Day (“Mandela Day”) on 18 July 2019, a group of UEM Sunrise Berhad (“UEM Sunrise”) staff volunteered their time, sweat and energy to perform good deeds and sustainable actions, sorting out thousands of books donated by the public after the launch of its BukuDrive, which was part of the company’s initiative for its community library programme, BukuHub.
Mandela Day was initiated by the United Nations in 2009 after Dr. Mandela’s global call to action that celebrates the idea that everyone has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact in every community. Dr. Mandela’s message was loud and clear: Every one of us can step up and act for enduring change, and we as responsible corporate citizens all have a duty to do so.
In 2017, Sello Hatang, Chief Executive at the Nelson Mandela Foundation called for those around the world to – instead of just volunteering 67 minutes on 18 July as the norm – use July 18 to renew their commitment to taking action throughout the year and to inspire change so that they can make every day a Mandela Day.
Kenny Wong, Chief Marketing Officer of UEM Sunrise said, “On this day of reflection on Dr. Mandela’s life and work, we embrace the true spirit of his legacy and aspire to emulate his example. We do this by taking actions and volunteering our time, hoping to raise awareness and support for his values of helping people in need and in doing so, share the power of knowledge through donated books.
With the company’s common goals aimed at globally coordinating efforts, sharing information and linking the needs to resources, BukuHub represents UEM Sunrise’s small but powerful strides towards Mandela Day’s focus area and goal of Education and Literacy. This is very much in line with the company’s CSR strategy of Education Enhancement and Community Engagement.
“We are happy, proud and thankful to the public for donating thousands of their books to BukuHub. Their simple act of giving has inspired us to continue our book drive. Together, let us do our part in building happy communities by helping to improve literacy levels, cultivate the reading habit, provide easy access to books for schools, the underprivileged, the orang asli community and the general public at large through BukuHub,” added Kenny.
UEM Sunrise’s BukuDrive initiative in Publika mall will continue until 31
st December 2019.
