KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (Bernama) -- The highly anticipated annual race event, the Orchid Run & Ride is returning for the fifth time this year with the theme “Taking Steps to Energise Lives”.

The theme this year is about enriching the lives of the less privileged whilst promoting a healthy and energised lifestyle. The event which is expected to attract more than 7,000 participants, is to be held at Persiaran KLCC here on Sunday, 6 October 2019.

Organised by the Association of Wives and Women Staff of PETRONAS (PETRONITA), the primary objective of the Orchid Run & Ride is to raise funds for non-profit organisations. It also aims to educate the public on diverse health issues and encourage them to lend a helping hand to those in need.

It will feature several categories. 

Category A – 12km Run: Men’s and Women’s Open (open to ages 16 years and above);

Category B – 5km Fun Run: (open to ages seven years and above) and;

Category C – 8km Fun Ride: (for ages 12 years and above). 

Last year, PETRONITA successfully raised RM400,000 through the event for various charitable organisations. This time around, it hopes to contribute the same amount to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia, the Child Development and Rehabilitation Centre of the Women and Children Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and ‘Tabung PPUMCare’ founded by University Malaya Medical Centre. 

“As the cost of living increases, the less privileged are indeed facing a greater challenge in accessing proper health care. Orchid Run & Ride presents an opportunity for all Malaysians to come together and help the ones in need whilst practising a healthy lifestyle. We are also commemorating the fifth anniversary of the event this year and we have some exciting activities in store for all participants,” said Yang Di-Pertua of PETRONITA, Puan Sri Dr Azura Ahmad Tajuddin. 

Amongst the highlights of the 2019 edition of Orchid Run & Ride include a special appearance by Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Motorsports driver Valtteri Bottas and a performance by Aman RA. The event will be hosted by Malaysian TV personality, Daphne Iking.
