Mohd Naguib Razak Named New Chairman of Government Investment Agency for Creative Industry

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- MyCreative Ventures today announced the appointment of its new Chairman, En. Mohd Naguib Razak; who will assume office from 6th of August 2019.

Naguib is currently the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Resonance Media Group of Companies, a joint venture comprising stakeholders in Tokyo, Dubai and Kuala Lumpur.

Working closely with Private Equity specialists, asset managers and investment bankers in USA, the Middle East and Asia, Japanese IP aggregators, and Hollywood professionals, Naguib has been developing Resonance Media into an international film finance, IP aggregation and production company with a range of animation, television and film projects in Tokyo, London and Los Angeles as well as a strong line-up of Japanese IPs under its supervision being prepared to be made into live-action feature films in Hollywood.

Naguib brings with him a unique blend of private and public sector experience and assumes the position with extensive domestic and international accolade behind him. Prior to Resonance, he was advising government organizations, regional media associations, international content aggregators and international production houses, local and abroad, in developing new platforms, strategies and business models for cohesive and sustainable industry development and expansion.

Notably, he participated in the “Working Group on the Development Potential of the Content Industry in East Asia and the ASEAN region” led by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade & Industry (METI) in 2013, involving Content Industry officials from 9 Ministries across Asia, including Japan, China, Korea and others.

Naguib also had the distinction of being the former Director General of FINAS from 2011 till 2012. A key achievement during that term was his leadership in preparing and presenting the “Film In Malaysia” Incentive (FIMI) Proposal and successfully securing its approval and funding. A notable beneficiary of this incentive was the film, “Crazy Rich Asians”.

He also presided over the widening of the Wajib Tayang (Compulsory Screening) rule to allow more local films to be made and receive FINAS’ tax rebates, and oversaw the widening of FINAS’ acknowledgement and support of Malaysian films to fully include Malaysian films in all languages. He also significantly overhauled and reconstituted the overall framework for Festival Filem Malaysia (FFM), including its criteria and the preliminary and final jury process.

Prior to his appointment as Director General of FINAS, Naguib was an independent documentary filmmaker, having produced and directed for Discovery Channel, National Geographic Channel and Crime & Investigation Network as well as having his creative documentary films presented, often in competition, at major film festivals, including Mannheim-Heidelberg, IDFA Amsterdam, Yamagata, Rencontres Paris/Berlin/Madrid and It’s All True São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro.

One of his earlier creative projects was the short film “BELAIAN”, made for the omnibus film, “3.11 A Sense Of Home Films” in 2011, initiated by Naomi Kawase, involving 21 celebrated international filmmakers including Victor Erice, Apichatpong Weeraseethakul, Jia Zhang-ke and Bong Joon-ho, as well as highly-regarded singer-songwriter, poet-visual artist, Patti Smith.

His film, “The Boat-maker and the Sea”, won Best Documentary Film at Festival Filem Malaysia 2003, whilst “Glass Enclosure: Tokyo Invisible” competed in international documentary film festivals in Taipei, São Paulo/Rio de Janeiro and Madrid.
